Hi, welcome

First, please post output between CODE tags (the # in the editor).
Second, we need more info: openSUSE version, desktop used, 32/64bit etc. The more info you provide the better we can help out.
Third, I’d like to see the repos configured:

zypper lr -d

and the brand/type videocard + whether a driver for it was installed.

please just tell me what to put in the command prompt and i will put the info on here. im so lost and ive tried everything i know how.

/sbin/lspci | grep VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Matrox Graphics, Inc. MGA G400/G450 (rev 85)

im not sure what you mean about the code tags in the editor. if you tell me how i can pull up the information on my video card i will do it. its a matrox dual head 450 i think. and i think the drivers are installed.

You get CODE tags by using the # button in the toolbar above the post editor.
Copy/paste from your terminal, the prompt, the command, the output and the next command between them.

Also I see that in this nor inm your other thread you mention which version of openSUSE you use. And which desktop.

People here are not clairvoyant, you should tell (and preferable show with computer facts) as much as possible.

Ok I’m just throwing an idea out but I know that a lot of people hit multimedia issues when mixing repos. Alright, so are you using the packman repository? I would recommend using it and make sure that all your vlc packages come from the packman repo. To do so just open up Yast’s Software Manager (after adding the repo and refreshing the repos) and search vlc. Then go to the versions tab and just switch it to packman. Apply the changes and then try VLC again.

now yast wont work so i cant even do that. im not a quitter but linux sure is tough to get going. Im running SUSE-Linux-Enterprise-Server-11-SP2 11.2.2-1.234. here is the error i get when trying to run yast gui.

process 27047: D-Bus library appears to be incorrectly set up; failed to read machine uuid: Failed to open “/var/lib/dbus/machine-id”: No such file or directory
See the manual page for dbus-uuidgen to correct this issue.

Open the task manager and search for kdesu. Kill all instances of it. Then try again. It might take an attempt or two. I noticed this happening to me too since I’ve upgraded to 4.10 but it usually goes away after a while.

Did you add that with an edit because I’m sure I didn’t see that just now. Anyways that changes things substantially. I do not think there is a packman repo for SLES so that’s a problem. However, if you have SLES 11 SP2 then you have support. Just open up a ticket and see the value added service they provide.Try this though:

sudo zypper ar -f -n packman http://packman.inode.at/suse/sle_11_sp1/ packman
sudo zypper install --from packman vlc

EDIT: You might need to dup from the repo

zypper dup --from packman

the first command you gave does this :

anon:~ # sudo zypper ar -f -n packman Index of /suse/sle_11_sp1/ packman
Adding repository ‘packman’ [done]
Repository named ‘packman’ already exists. Please use another alias.

Then just change it to “packman2” and use “packman2” wherever I previously used “packman” Seriously its just a repo alias. Also if you already have the right packman on your system you can just skip that step.

anon:~ # sudo zypper install --from packman vlc

Ill put whatever you suggest in my command prompt… as long as it wont crash my system ill do whatever you say to do. Ive been thinking about just starting all over and doing a fresh installation for the 3rd time in 2 weeks but i think that the main issue is i dont understand how to solve problems in linux so reinstalling everything wont do diddlley squat.

GUI apps need kdesu to run as root. eg.

kdesu vlc

glibc wasn’t installed? What the hell!!! I’m going to guess that your system is borked because maybe your install media is messed up if nothing wants to work properly after so many installs.

Also why SLES? Seriously, why? Its not really designed for dektop usage. Use openSUSE 12.2. It will save you so many headaches as the software is newer, more repos, more available help etc. etc. I mean wow, VLC 1.x is ancient! SLES is for people who know what they are doing and need it. Yast is also in openSUSE.

P.S. Don’t forget to check md5sums of the downloaded media and don’t run apps as root.

I just checked your repos from a previous post 11.2 != SLES 11 SP2. Honestly no wonder you aren’t getting anywhere those packages will never work on your system. Use the packman repo I gave and my procedure even if you have to substitute in “packman2” as the name!

Then you are at the wrong forums. This is the openSUSE forums. Not the SLES/SLED forums. You should go to https://forums.suse.com/

IMHO this is leading nowhere. There is no Packman for SLES/SLED.

I hope the message that the OP mixed up all sorts of SLES/SLED and openSUSE repos is clear. This being a SLED/SLES problem, the OP should go to those forums (may be after reinstalling his SLES/SLED).

This will be closed.
