Not to be polemical, but I’ve been using VLC on everything from Windows XP and 7 to Debian, Kubuntu and Mint KDE for pretty much as long as it has existed, and I’ve never had problems. But on OpenSUSE it has so many annoyances that I’m looking for good alternatives.
Problems:
The VLC window opens maximized, but the video is whatever its original size is, in the bottom left corner.
If the VLC window is any size but that of the original video and I fast-forward or rewind, the window size changes to the video’s original size. Every time.
If VLC is fullscreen and I FF or RW, two things can happen: (a) the video ends up shrinking to its original size and moving to the top left corner, or (b) VLC drops out of full screen and resizes.
Again, this only happens to me on OpenSUSE. I’m currently using 3.0.0+git4670-1.12 from Packman, but I’ve used older, non-beta versions, too. This has gone on for like a year.

Alternatives are e.g.: Xine, Kaffeine (a KDE frontend to xine), MPlayer, SMPlayer, Totem (uses gstreamer).
Strange though that I never saw problems like you describe here, and other people probably neither as it’s the first I hear about such problems.
The VLC window opens maximized, but the video is whatever its original size is, in the bottom left corner.
This might be a known bug in Qt5.5 that has been fixed recently.
See https://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/510122-VLC-problems-(black-bars)-with-latest-Tumbleweed
But openSUSE 13.2 only has 5.4.2 and should not be affected.
Please post your repo list:
zypper lr -d
And a side-note: you should rather use the normal VLC version. A beta can always have strange problems.
Here’s my repo info. There are many I used just once to get a certain program.
By the way, I didn’t use the beta for a long time – in fact I switched to it to see if it fixed these problems!
Thanks for your response!

The first time I saw your repo list I said to myself "really? 47 repositories… WTF?
I’m just saying!
As others pointed out, that’s quite a long list…
In particular stuff from multimedia:apps and multimedia:libs might interfere. The latter even contains the latest versions of vlc itself and also other multimedia libraries used by vlc, so you might have some mixture of incompatible packages depending on how/when you installed what. Normally, YaST/zypper just pick the highest version of a package no matter where it comes from when you/it wants to install a new one.
Anyway, try a full switch to Packman:
sudo zypper dup --from 20
I don’t see any official Qt repo in your list, so you shouldn’t be affected by the Qt 5.5 problem I mentioned.
But I haven’t checked what all repos in your list actually contain…
So maybe post the output of:
rpm -qa libQt5*
By the way, I didn’t use the beta for a long time – in fact I switched to it to see if it fixed these problems!
Yes, I didn’t assume otherwise.
This was meant as general remark.
And as mentioned, I never had problems like you describe with the stable version here (except for that mentioned bug in Qt 5.5 that’s been fixed recently)

I used 13.2 since it came out both the 32 and 64 bit builds I never had any such issues with vlc, the only issue is the known qt5.5 bug, from your repo list you shouldn’t be effected.
You have way too many repo’s and some of them are not only unnecessary but buggy
first do a dup with packman (every opensuse users needs to do that)
zypper dup --from 20
Did you change the default Kernal?
why do you have Kernel:stable if you messed with the kernel restore the default one from the update repo as the video drivers are compiled with that one, what graphic card and drivers do you have?
I think there is a bad online guide cos I’ve seen the repo’s 27 & 34 used a lot and I can’t think of a use for them as all multimedia apps and libs in OBS are crippled you should only use packman.
After dup-ing to packman (it’s number will change) I’d remove these repo’s 2, 3, 27 and 34, you should recheck the rest of the repo’s and remove unneeded one’s, for example the mozilla repo releases updates only a day earlier then the regular repository it’s not really needed.
That is such an OpenSUSE thing to say!
Seriously, I spent 6-8 years using Debian and several of its derivatives and I don’t think I once heard these kinds of comments about having too many repos, nor did I have any problems because of them.
Where do they come from? OpenSUSE’s one-click installs, of course. Which seem to be equivalent to PPAs. And besides the obvious and logical warnings about security risks, Debian distros don’t choke on PPAs.
Seriously, I don’t see the alternative, except to not use software I want or need. For example, OpenSUSE’s default font rendering makes my eyes bleed, and while various config options can reduce the bloodflow, my desk still puddles in the stuff. So I installed Infinality, which if done right gives MAC-level results. But that requires an additional repo or two.
And so on and so forth.

lol
did you try
sudo zypper dup --from 20
what was the result, are you using a non-standard (one that’s not from the main oss or update repositories) kernel, what’s your graphic card and video driver?
but seriously a 9 year Linux veteran having 48 repositories I’m amassed that your machine actually booted, I’m not even sure how apper dealt with all those repo’s did you ever do an update?
ps. aren’t you an geeko now too rotfl!

I just did that, and am running some user file backups in case something happens on reboot (I run an encrypted LVM-LUKS system, which complicates things if you can’t boot).

Such snarkiness. Really?
If years of use made one a geek, I’d be an über-geek – I first used RedHat 4.0 or so, name after a toothpaste as I recall. That was in the late 90s. But I’m neither a programmer nor a sys admin – I’m just a technically-inclined user who prefers the freedom and power of Linux for his everyday work and entertainment.
What I am new to is OpenSUSE. The fact that one-click installs add repositories that contain just about everything a programmer has ever written, and not just files related to a specific program, took my by surprise. That’s an awful practice! And it doesn’t seem to happen with PPAs, which are program-centric, rather than programmer-centric.
This matter of having too many repos is so common, judging by forum posts, that OpenSUSE would do itself a big favor by (a) warning new users about this, and (b) establishing a new policy of one program per one-click install repo.

That was your problem lack of proper codecs.
what’s a ppa? some sort of online repo right, did you ever have 48 ppa’s?
I did test ubuntu and kubuntu even tested debian proper I never really like them, maybe it was the deb file format or the fact that there was no kde in ubuntu and to use kde you had to install a separate OS?
You started this thread wrong, you should have told us your issues and asked for idea’s, not by bashing our OS and then getting upset that we find you as funny as Windows 10 user.
Seriously you need to clean your repo list or goto yast->repo managment and set a higher priority (lower number) to the packman, update and oss repo’s.

I must accept your criticism. I’ll start a separate thread, as I’ve rebooted and the VLC issue is gone after following advice in this thread). The goal now is to clean out and prioritize my repos.
Cheers, and thanks!
The problem when you have a ton of repo’s is you really don’t know if there are compatible versions of a given software across all. Many of the repo’s you have are private ones and unless you really investigate you don’t really know what they may have in them. If you get packages from such repos don’t keep them active because you may draw in incompatible packages that the private user may be experimenting with. With VLC the default in openSUSE is no proprietary codecs. (note the open in the name). So you get them from another repos and best to only use packman. Packman is the semi-official place to get proprietary stuff. But if you just load the codecs then these will most times be incompatible to the version of VLC provided by openSUSE and it breaks. So you have to get ALL VLC packages from packman to be able to actually use VLC to view/use proprietary formats.
Seriously you have far too many Repos. You just ask for trouble. Get stuff from where you need it but don’t leave the repo active except for the community repos. And avoid any saying factory unless you are testing experimental builds. And you could have started the thread a bit less confrontationally
