VLC problem

Hello,

I’m running opensuse 13.2 and my VLC is encountering the following problems:

  • doesn’t play the video of mkv files, but it plays the audio
  • for mp4 files it shows like one frame per second

The strange thing (for me) is that if I run opensuse in recovery mode, VLC works fine, beautifully playing mkv and mp4.

I reinstalled VLC several times and made sure it updates from packman’s.
I don’t know what else to do. My understanding of the insides of operating systems is quite low. Has anyone got an idea of what I should do?

Other video players work fine (kaffeine, mplayer), but my prefference for VLC is related to the easiness of using subtitles.

Thank you!

Here’s the output of two commands that I’ve learned are important in vlc related problems.

output of zypper lr -d

That means that your video card or driver doesn’t play nice. Probably
you have installed the proprietary driver, which fails somehow, but the
opendriver which is probably used on recovery mode does work. Just a guess.

You have to post your video card, what driver you use, and then somebody
else will guide you — I think I can’t.

Maybe the output of vlc run in a terminal in verbose mode would give a clue.

Cheers / Saludos,

(from 13.1 x86_64 “Bottle” at Telcontar)

Then it’s likely no vlc or codecs installation problem, but rather related to the graphics driver and/or hardware decoding.

So, what graphics card/driver are you using?
Maybe install the package Mesa-demo-x and post the output of:

glxinfo|grep render

and/or your /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

If it’s nvidia, make sure you don’t have libvdpau_va_gl1 installed, remove it if it is.
If it’s something else, make sure you don’t have vdpau-video installed.

If none of the above helps, try to uninstall libvdpau_va_gl1 even it you are not using nvidia, or try to install it if you don’t use nvidia and it isn’t installed.

I’ve tried installing the proprietay, then uninstalled it. It din’t solve anything.
I hope it’s the right output.

Thank you!

This shows that you didn’t really uninstall the proprietary driver.
How did you install it in the first place? (packages, or downloaded from AMD’s homepage?)
And the Xorg.0.log would even be more interesting now.

glxinfo|grep render

direct rendering: Yes

    GL_NV_conditional_render, GL_NV_depth_clamp, GL_NV_light_max_exponent,
    GL_OES_element_index_uint, GL_OES_fbo_render_mipmap,

The card is an ATI Radeon .
libvdpau_va_gl1 was installed, I updated it. Still not working.
The contents of /var/log/Xorg.0.log is quite large, I’m not sure how to post it here. I can post the part that is of interest, if needed.

Thank you.

I see.
I installed it from https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:AMD_fglrx , using the one click installation.
I think i used yast when I tried uninstalling it.
How should I uninstall it?

The VLC problem existed before fglrx installation.

Actually that should be fine then. And your glxinfo output shows that the intel driver is working as well.

But you said you uninstalled the proprietary fglrx driver, how did you do that then?

You can uninstall it using YaST, by searching for “fglrx” and marking all 5 (I think) packages for uninstallation.
But I think that shouldn’t be necessary (unless you have other problems, like Xorg not starting at all), Xorg.0.log should show if it is working correctly though.
Please upload the file to http://susepaste.org or a similar sharing site and post a link.

The VLC problem existed before fglrx installation.

As I said before, try uninstalling libvdpau_va_gl1.
Some (intel) users have reported problems when it is installed. And VLC does support VA-API natively so it isn’t necessary in that case.
And again, check that you don’t have vdpau-video installed, that’s only for nvidia cards.

I uninstalled the libvdpau_va_gl1. It worked. Thank you!
Will this libvdpau_va_gl1 be needed for other applications, or should I just forget about it?

vdpau-video wasn’t installed

I uninstalled it from YaST, unchecking the five packages. They are all unchecked now.
So is the fglrx still in use?

Hm, your Xorg.0.log doesn’t show any sign of fglrx loaded at all (and not even that the AMD card is detected at all).

What fglrx packages do you have installed now?

rpm -qa | grep -i fglrx

Did you reboot after installing the fglrx driver?
Did you uninstall it and reboot before you posted the lspci output or did you do that afterwards?

Anyway, I’m not sure whether you have a hybrid system, or just two independent graphics cards.
And I’m not really an expert regarding those.

But my previous suggestions regarding libvdpau_va_gl1 and vdpau-video still apply in any case though.

rpm -qa | grep -i fglrx returns nothing

It means there aren’t any fglrx packages installed, if I’m not mistaking?

I uninstalled fglrx some days ago, many reboots followed after that.
I myself have no idea if there are two cards, but I would be surprised.

Thank you again!

No it is not really needed as such.

What it does is to provide an interface for applications that use VDPAU (nvidia’s hardware decoding) to use VA-API (intel and AMD’s hardware decoding) instead.
But most applications should support VA-API anyway.
I know that VLC, Xine, and Gstreamer do. MPlayer not though, but it should fallback to the traditional software decoding instead.

vdpau-video wasn’t installed

Good.

No.

Correct.

I uninstalled fglrx some days ago, many reboots followed after that.

Ok. The Xorg log would confirm that I suppose, and the glxinfo output as well.
But the lspci output you posted showed fglrx as being available still. That’s what puzzles me a bit.

Just OOC: why exactly did you uninstall fglrx again?
Because it didn’t help with this particular problem, or did you have other problems after installing it?
If this is indeed a hybrid system, installing fglrx might be a good idea after all (if it works).

I myself have no idea if there are two cards, but I would be surprised.

Well, the lspci output you posted earlier shows two cards. One intel (that’s the only one being used according to the Xorg.0.log), and one AMD Radeon HD 8670A/8670M/8750M.

I cannot tell much about your system other than what you posted.

Thank you again!

You’re welcome.

I uninstalled it because it din’t help with VLC and it made the graphics slow in an application called bzflag, a little video game.
I don’t recall if it caused problems with video playing in kaffeine or not, tho.

Next time, just upload to susepaste.org and post a link.

Ok, if you’re fine with only using the intel chip you don’t need it anyway.

As I said, I don’t have any experience with those hybrid systems (AMD’s PowerXPress, nvidida’s Optimus) myself, but AFAIK the way they are built it might happen that things run slower on the discrete video chip (AMD or nvidia) than on intel.
With fglrx, you should be able to configure what applications run on what chip in AMD’s control center.

As bzflag seems to work fine on the intel chip, it should help to tell the driver to run it on the intel chip, I’d guess…

So, if you want to you could give it another try, or just stick with the intel chip (AFAIK the kernel should meanwhile power down the discrete video card automatically if it’s not in use, so you should also save power that way, you could also check whether you can disable it in the BIOS settings though).
But that’s your decision of course.
