vlc player and totem disappearing

after installing vlc and package for video when i am playing with video with them they come for playing that video for second and than disappear.

so tell me what i do . to stop them from disappearing . so that i can watch video.I have OPENSUSE 11 GNOME.
thank you

Run vlc from an xterm and report any errors. ie. if the video is “video.avi”, then type:
vlc /home/username/path/to/video/file/video.avi
and report the errors.

Also provide the output of:
rpm -q vlc
rpm -qa | grep ffmpeg

It would also help if you name the video and audio codec of the file you are trying to play.

output are as follows:

rpm -q vlc

vlc-0.8.6h-4.1

rpm -qa|grep ffmpeg

libffmpeg0-0.4.9.13782-1.1

and i am tring to play “wmv and avi files”.

i am new to linux.

and how i can play 3gp file.

thank you

Please, as noted above, run vlc from an xterm and report any errors. ie. if the video is “video.avi”, then type:
vlc /home/username/path/to/video/file/video.avi
and report the errors.

Strange you would have a packman packaged rpm but not a packman packaged libffmpeg0. If it were me, I would use a packman packaged libffmpeg0:
ie for 32-bit PC: PackMan :: Informationen zum Paket ffmpeg
for 64-bit PC: PackMan :: Informationen zum Paket ffmpeg

Also, make certain you have installed w32codec-all and xvid. In addition to vlc, a good player is smplayer (an excellent front end to mplayer). In the links I provide, ensure you navigate to your opensuse architecture:
w32codec-all - PackMan :: Informationen zum Paket Win32-Codecs
xvid - PackMan :: Informationen zum Paket dvd2xvid
smplayer - PackMan :: Informationen zum Paket smplayer

I believe ffmpeg (and likely other apps) can play a 3gp file. So ensure you have ffmpeg and libffmpeg0 installed:
PackMan :: Informationen zum Paket ffmpeg

I think amrnb and amrwb provide 3gp capabilities:
amrnb: PackMan :: Informationen zum Paket amrnb
amrwb: PackMan :: Informationen zum Paket amrwb
I found the above by a quick search on the packman packager web site. I recommend you learn how to use the packman web site search engine.

output of that vlc command is:

*** PULSEAUDIO: Unable to connect: Connection refused
X Error of failed request: BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 140 (XVideo)
Minor opcode of failed request: 19 ()
Serial number of failed request: 89
Current serial number in output stream: 90

thank you

this is error report which i am getting when i am playing with totem player

The program ‘totem’ received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was ‘BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)’.
(Details: serial 50 error_code 11 request_code 140 minor_code 19)
(Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

You could try removing pulse audio, and then try again.

To see what pulse audio apps you have installed type:
rpm -qa | grep pulse
and then remove them. Make a note as to what you removed, so you can put them back on later, if it should be appropriate.

I’m not a totem user, so it would be more useful if someone who has actually used totem chimes in.

Now with my having stated that, if I were on someone else’s openSUSE-11.0 PC, and I saw this error, I would be inclined to investigate if it is caused by either:
a. 3D desktop affects interfering with totem, or
b. inappropriate video driver chosen in totem. Many applications (such as vlc and mplayer) give one a choice as to which video driver one can select. Its possible totem does as well.
