just noticed that for kde4 unstable there is now rpm’s for vlc,
does anyone know what differentiates these from the Packman repo? I
would guess that there’s missing proprietary codecs in playground
because of legal requirements.

You do know you can look at everything on OBS now? Spec files, patches
etc, no need to login.

Short version: It’s there just because of the new Phonon-VLC backend. Continue using the Packman version as usual.
