I have installed Opensuse 42.1 i installed either VLC 2.2.1
When i open a file it opens always 2 windows: one windows with the controls and showing the vlc logo, and the video opened in another window where nothings can be done…o options aviable, no controls etc…
in a full video all as normal.
What is that how can i have obviously the video and controls in a unique window?
Another: if i close the video window, the audio stills go on
Here an example
just wanted to add that this bug also applies if vlc is run in skinned mode
is this a vlc or LEAP bug
does this happen on tw or another Linux distro
I have
vlc-2.2.1-291.1.x86_64 from packman, what is the current Tumbleweed version, does it happen there?
The vlc package is the same across all distributions.
It doesn’t happen here in 13.2, haven’t tried TW yet.
But it might be caused by the particular Qt5 version included in Leap (5.5.0 with some additional patches) or something else that’s specific to Leap.
An update to Qt5 has been submitted for Leap already (to fix VLC’s video resize bug), maybe it helps with this as well… (but I’m just guessing)
Good job, thanks for submitting the bug about it. I wasn’t sure if I should or not, but I did mention it and link to screen shot in another bug thread of mine before the release of 42.1. https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=950898#c5
Didn’t report it because I assumed it was only VLC related and wasn’t sure how to go about reporting issue to VLC developer, or if it’s Packman repo guy that needs to fix it, or what.
Well, it’s definitely not a problem with Qt5.5.0 itself or the added patches.
I tried on Leap now (yes, I can reproduce the problem), and even after installing the latest Qt 5.5.1 packages from KDE:Qt5 (which I wouldn’t recommend to try as you probably break your Plasma5 desktop) the problem persists.
The same Qt 5.5.1 packages don’t show the problem on 13.2 or Tumbleweed.
I saw that installing an alternative or any custom skin the problem disappears, its on the default skin, but the custom skins on un vlc are for me unusable.
So i had to install smplayer that seems to be the better alternative
Someone reported having double windows in smplayer also, not sure which opensuse version they were using now. I haven’t tried smplayer yet of course, I’m a VLC guy. But might give smplayer a try, just would rather the double window issues would get fixed in general though.
I agree. I just installed smplayer and seems to be working as expected (single window / main interface window), no double window issue. Just might forget VLC player from now on lol.
SMplayers seems to be very good, really not bad. I think it seem to be the best alternative to VLC.
But a difference from VLC on performance are the subtitles, in smplayer the quality is poor than vlc
I’ll try SMplayer out more after I get some sleep here. I don’t usually use subtitles much unless I grab a movie that’s not english, subtitles are generally nice to have but a lot of movies I get don’t have them so it’s not big loss for me. I’d love to just uninstall VLC player and etc, but probably might keep it till it’s fixed, or hopefully gets fixed soon regardless. I zypper’ed in SMplayer, but does it generally come from packman repo or just OpenSuse repos? I’m off to bed for now though lol.
I didn’t say it was a kde but a qt issue (there was no qt applications option in bugzilla so I chose the closest), qt is to kde what gtk is to gnome, and I think it probably is a qt issue as vlc is a qt application even if the bug is in vlc’s code it’s still a qt bug.
If this is happening on sle12 (and that has been out for almost a year) I’m not hoping for a quick fix, has anyone tried vlc3 beta? (I’ll try it when I get the time)
