VLC missing in OpenSuse

Using OpenSuse 12.2 and VLC from repository Index of /pub/vlc/SuSE/12.1/
I have installed vlc-beta. When I open package manager in YAST, go to the VLC repository the stable vlc is missing/gone.
Looking into the repository in a browser I can see that the vlc package really is there.
http://download.videolan.org/pub/vlc/SuSE/12.1/x86_64/vlc-2.0.4-2.1.x86_64.rpm

Anyone know why I can’t see this package in YAST package manager? Yes I have refreshed all repositories.
I also have Packman repository and vlc-2.0.3 is there, however VLC own repository has a newer version.

I have even tried to remove the repository and then add it again. No effect.

DON’T use that repo

Those two repos are not compatible.

I am not using any VLC packages from Packman. I want the latest VLC therefore I am using the VLC repository.
Why should I not use VLC repository. I am not using any other media player, nor do I want to.

This uses packman for the vlc packages, but I am using VLCs own repositories instead.

http://en.opensuse.org/Additional_package_repositories#VLC_VideoLan_client
And I don’t mix this with Packman. Only using VLC for VLC and its required packages…

12.2 should be this repo, if you insist
Index of /pub/vlc/SuSE/12.2/

I don’t see what what your problem is

> Why should I not use VLC repository.

because the one in there doesn’t work…
but, the one in packman does…

(because this is openSUSE and the VLC in the VLC repo is crippled in
order to meet the criteria of “open” (or something, i forgot) while the
VLC in packman is ready to go…if you can’t live without the very very
very latest version then go fetch its source and compile and install
it…i’ve never done that, so i don’t know but it might be real easy, or
not…the 2.0.3 i’m running is just great!!)

and, note: if you ask for help and a guy with 32,000+ posts in this
forum, and another guy with a @opensuse.org email address gives you FREE
advice…you should probably consider taking their hints and say thank
you, instead of “I am not using any VLC packages from Packman.”

so, don’t take from packman, and when you can’t get the other VLCs to
run, then what??

Never said I disregarded your advice. I myself have never had any problem with VLC from the VLC repository. It works fine. No problem running it.

Running the VLC from VLC repository was never my problem. I am currently running the vlc-beta from there, but wanted to go back to the stable version. My problem was that the vlc stable version wasn’t there. I mean it is there in the repository, but I don’t have it under available packages.

I am still using OpenSuse 12.1. I see I have a typo in my previous post.
As stated my problem is not with VLC itself, but that the stable version is not in the available packages list (even if it is in the repo).

There appears (I see from another post) that there are errors in the file list compared with the actual

You need to report this to the maintainers

Thanks. Finally an explanation to this problem.

Now back to VLC. Why does packman vlc work better than the one from VLC repo? Isn’t it built from the same source? Wondering if this could be the cause for a problem I am having with VLC where it sometimes freezes the video for a few seconds while audio keeps playing.

The advice to use vlc from the Packman repo, as well as the advice not to use the videolan repo, is based on experiences with the packages from the videolan repo. These packages have not been created by openSUSE, so if you insist on using packages from the vlc repo, report your issues at videolan.org

Often wondered that myself. Packman cover a lot of different packages, and their update frequency is high. They certainly get a lot of practice packaging on openSUSE. It could just be down to relative skill levels.

I mentioned this issue in #videolan
The maintainer is @DimStar
Not in irc at the time. But apparently he has had hardware issues

Just one little off-topic remark (I had to). Do people still use IRC? 10 years since I last used IRC.

They probably use updated libraries different than the standard set (or compiled with different
options), so you have to use them too. And if you do then other packages that used the old libraries
may fail.

Just a guess on my part, but the fact is that problems arise from combining both repos. Packman
gives less problems overall.

Yup. A lot of people still use irc. Guess it’s still relevant? I also like the packages from packman, I used to have some odd issues now and then but nothing since openSUSE 12.1

Absolutely
Especially the devs

I tried using VLC from packman. Video playback actually got worse(most noticeable with HD video). so I’m switching back to the VLC repo.
