I have just installed VLC 2.0.8 on Linux 3.7.10-1.16-desctop openSUSE 12.3 (Dartmouth)(x86_64) and KDE 4.10.5 “release 1”. Player works perfectly, but since now zypper returns the following (the same as YaST) error:
If this was me, I would consider a restart of my PC and/or wait a few minutes for a localized network disturbance in the force to pass you by. In the meantime, I have a nice bash script for working with zypper you can find here: Zypper Command - Zypper Package Management Menu System - Version 2.00 - Blogs - openSUSE Forums . I did check the link you provided and its good for me, but really, these network things can happen from time to time and there is nothing wrong on your end.
I wonder if this relates to a problem I have. It normally shows up when there is heavy internet use eg son and torrents to his own PC but I am seeing something similar streaming radio into vlc at 128kbs and very little else going on. I use a normal adsl 2+ line.
Basically when web pages are loading elements n/nn shows at the end of the address bar. Most of the elements arrive quickly and then there is a delay a very very long delay at times -even never. Sometimes when one element count ends another lot may be sent from the server. Often the longest delay is the last element in a block of them.
I wonder if the OP is streaming video and trying to access the web / update and install etc from the net. I just did a YAST update while streaming the radio without any apparent problem but the data rate for a video is likely to be higher.
Worse still this doesn’t seem to happen on Windoze equipped PC’s or Ipad’s and seems to be down to Linux. I wonder if there is some setting some where that can sort this sort of thing out. I am running a standard 12.3 install, d-link dnr-250n router wired to my pc and a d-link bridge modem as the router is 10 base T for office etc use. The PC is an HP Z420 3.6ghz Xeon workstation. I have had the same problem using a higher end home / small office modem router on previous versions of OpenSuse. I normally use Opera for browsing but Firefox can be the same. Opera has even offered to switch on turbo mode as “I am on a slow network”. Speed tests show download speeds of 14mb/s +. with this router.
I should add relating to my previous post that the actual band width used downloading the torrent is low but accesses to the router are frequent. The upload rates are minuscule.
