vlc error doesnot support vidoe format "MSS2"

No suitable decoder module:
VLC does not support the audio or video format “MSS2”. Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this.

i’m using. opansuse11.1

anyone experience this too?

i’m tying to play wmv files.

can anyone tell me which program hsouldi chose to play such files?
the detialed instructions how to install it. I’ve also installed kaffine which i think dont even work.

Please read the sticky about restricted multimedia codecs. You’re probably already in a mix of Videolan en Packman packages.

Multi-media and Restricted Format Installation Guide - openSUSE Forums

I do experience this too, nearly all codecs, on everything but Mplayer. It produced itself with the latest updates of Packman and KDE installed (using KDE 3.5). I do not think it is a problem of having it installed rightly. There was as far as I recall the process a “downgrade to…” of a library when installing the newest Amarok-pm. Maybe the automated downgrade installed a non pm version (as the version number might have been higher).
However since then the previous full functionality has been disabled. Will post when I find out why and what library is involved.
Your mplayer of the pm-repository should work fine though…

is there a chance that i can fix this or i have to reinstall the os again?

I have a 64 bit system. Try this out if you have the same asset:
go to yast and try to install the libavcodec52.
With me that causes an enormous amount of conflicts. The problem with me produced with the latest amarok-pm update. I think you should wait one or two days. There is apparently a problem with a broken dependency. I think they will fix it.
Alternative would be to de-install amarok completely and to fix the codecs. Then to search for an amarok version that does not have the dependency problem.
Ps. You VERY rarely have to reinstall an OS for such a reason, don’t you think so. The major part of the problems fix swiftly by the work of the comunity and the rest is solvable mainly after a few days with a bit of search-machine works (with other words, you altavista/bing/google/yahoo it, to be politically correct). Just be patient. If your “life depends on it” then install the packman version of mplayer that does currently preserve full functionality (at least with me).

howcan i delete those files i’ve installed?
iwanted to start again by following the instructions here/

Multi-media and Restricted Format Installation Guide - openSUSE Forums

How can one possibly answer you to this question without knowing what files you have installed…?
You “un-install” files by deselecting them in yast, it is very straightforward.
You open yast - software management.
You see the window with the search function and you search for the package you wish to change.
In the lower part of the window you notice tags. Look at the tag “version” to understand what version you have installed. That gives you an idea if there is a *-pm version available. You select it and tell yast to force an update of the package (you put a green tag) and that’s it. If there are conflicts try to solve it. If it is too complicated to solve now, well I just told you to be patient and wait for one or two days.

Please post result of:

zypper lr -d

I can reproduce this problem with vlc 1.0.2 from packman on x86_64 only, i586 works fine.

Looks like a bug, if anything else is OK (no mix with videolan packages, I don’t even have videolan in my repo list) please post your reports here on the packman mailing list.

Packman Info Page

Registered right now and will post it. Thanks for the link.

Using vlc started from the command line with high verbosity

vlc -vvv /where/ever/some_file

might give useful debugging information to be included in your report.

I have registered and produced the output. Do I understand correctly it is enough to write and email with the description to the proposed address
packman-at-links2linux.de with the report? Forgive my ignorance, never filed a bugreport…
Seems so (wiki)…

hope you can help me with this result.

it also give me this error:

File reading failed:
VLC could not open the file “/where/ever/some_file”.
Your input can’t be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL ‘/where/ever/some_file’. Check the log for details.

Try this:

echo "Next time I get an _example_ code, I try to switch my brain on before typing."

Yup, the mail is now visible in the archive, there is always a little delay.

Now we’ll have to wait and see (normally the “PackMen” have pretty short reaction times to bug reports).

I tried rebuilding locally from src.rpm to see if it might have been some problem during build or upload process (corrupted package/faulty upload to the repository server), but unfortunately I got the same result (not very surprising though, a corrupted file should have resulted in warnings during install via YaST/zypper due to wrong checksums).

All I can do is reiterate :
