I’ve done it. The wmv file now plays but it only plays the audio part. The video part doesn’t show up.
And the vlc have this warning
No suitable decoder module:
VLC does not support the audio or video format “MSS2”. Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this.
Any solution for it?
mss2 is a rarely used legacy windows media codec that is known to not work in linux players (and most windows players also).
I guess you could give smplayer a try but I believe it probably still wont play.
There is a guide here to get it going using WINE
How to play MSS2 codec (Windows Media Video 9 Screen) .wmv files in 64-bit Linux
Oh so there’s no way around it aside from using wine? I guess I’ll do that. Thanks!
personally - what I’d do if you want to keep the video files or they are important to you is boot into windows - or locate somebody who has windows and use windows movie maker to convert them to a different codec that isn’t fast disappearing from the planet.
I would imagine that pretty soon you wont even be able to play these files in windows media player.
I can’t even remember the last time I saw a .wmv file
Didn’t know it was still kicking about
I don’t suppose you have a small one you could make available for us to try?
It’s only 13mb. Can I upload a video here? Or give me an email-adress and I’ ll send it to you.
I’ll PM you my email
Got it
It doesn’t play
I’ll see what options I can find… if any
If anyone else wants it

Thanks! I hope you’ll find a solution. Goodluck!
I’ll see, but it sems unlikely due to MSS (Microsoft Super SH1T) format
It plays on my openSUSE-12.1 stock KDE with firefox 16.02.

plays right from google in my Google Chrome Stable 22.0 on openSUSE 11.4
Evergreen (don’t even have to download it–just wait for it to load in
the video player box in Chrome and then click the arrow to play)
in other words: Just works!

plays right from google in my Google Chrome Stable
So it does
I downloaded it, and note it plays in Smplayer-0.8.1, VLC-2.0.3, and Kaffeine-4.7.2-release-5 on my openSUSE-12.1 64-bit PC (running stock KDE4)

I have one such sitting in my video folder. It is dated 2009. Xine opens
it just fine, and says the codec is MS Windows Media Video 9 (ffmpeg).
Interestingly, playing it hangs xine (after playing), it can not quit
and has to be killed.

Please, can you try xine on it? I have a capped Internet connection at
500 MB/month, so I can not download it (for the moment).
