Vista/SUSE Dualboot issue

Hello all,

Strange problem I’m having. I’ve had Vista and SUSE 11.2 dual-booting on my laptop for months, no problems at all. Last night I restated and then I went to log back into Vista. When choosing Vista I would get an error along the lines of “rootverify, disk read error. Press ctrl alt del to restart.” I am still able to get into SUSE fine, just no windows.
After researching on these forums I tried doing some troubleshooting. I checked the menu.lst. I made a change to this list, now when I go to choose Vista it brings me to the recovery mode, and when i choose the vista 2 login, it brings me right back to the bootloader screen. In menu .lst i changed (hd,0) on the windows sections. I’d change them back but now menu.lst is blank. At this point I am lost. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Opps you did not make a backup of menu.lst before editing it???

The original error points to a corrupted disk and may indicate that the disk is failing. You should get a low level scanner app from the drive maker’s web site to test the disk.

When you’re in SUSE 11.2 can you back up your Vista folders so you don’t lose your important data on Vista?

When you’re in recovery mode can you see your files on the Vista partitions. Can you chkdsk?
Sorry I forget what commands are available in Windows recovery mode.

If you’re booted into Vista recovery mode then what can you repair without damaging the drive or the installation?
