I would like to replace two desktop pc (openSuSE 11.0 and XP pro) by one
virtualized pc with openSuSE as host. So I installed XEN and vmware from
the distribution. But trying to set up a virtual machine, only different
flavours of Linux where offered as guests.
Is it possible to run openSuSE 11.0 and XP pro as guests on an openSuSE 11.0
host and to switch the screen between the guests? If yes, which software
should be used? Where can I find installation documentation?
You should decide on one and only one virtualization technology at a time. If you do have more than one installed, do not <run> them at the same time… or risk dire consequences.
As for your other questions, I’d recommend you maybe try several one at a time. Personally, I’m partial to VMware because I’ve been using their technology for years and been quite happy. One advantage VMware has over Xen is that you can run 64-bit guestOS even if your hardware CPU don’t support either Intel VT or AMD Pacifica (64-bit extensions to the 32-bit CPU).
Particularly if you’re running only one or two guestOS, I wouldn’t worry too much about VM management, just make sure you have plenty of resources and either one very big display or a multi-display setup. Remember, you don’t necessarily “switch” between displays, you view any and all simultaneously as you like.
Consider Virtual Box. It’s great for me. Not a sap on the cpu either!
