Getting ready to try installing Virtualbox and have a couple
of questions:
I need to be able to connect to my usb printer.
Does this mean I have to use the version from SUN
or will the OSE version on the openSUSE DVD support it?
If I use the sun version is the 10.3 RPM Ok since
they do not have an 11.0 RPM. Also what about the
PAE module, Vidio & Mouse drives for xorg and the tools.
Is it correct their RPM problably won’t work and I’ll
need to compile one?
If you want usb in any way shape or form, you want to use the version from SUN because the OSE version doesn’t support usb.
I’ve been using the 10.3 version without any issues on 11.0. I’m not sure what you mean by the second part of the question - I don’t use the pae kernel, but haven’t had any issues with the sun rpm.
USB support is dead in OSE. Mouse and keyboard work, 'cos it would be impossible to use OSE version without these right? Simply, USB mouse and keyboard devices are detected as PS/2. So, no. REAL USB filters only in Sun provided version.
As for 10.3 package on 11, I had some issues with it, that couldn’t be resolved. So it may vary from config to config. E.G. I was using package for Mandy 2008.0 in 2008.1 w/o a single problem.

I use VB in mandy 2008.1, without any issues. USB,Mouse,Keyboard works fine.Printer i am not sure.
In suse i have to capture mouse,but in mandy it detect it whenever you point or put mouse on it.
Mara is correct, depends on different conf.
With some works fine, and with some have a bit issues.
I just installed VirtualBox Non-ose and had problems after the install. With the 10.3 install on openSuse 11 you have to install pam-devel as it will fail due to the missing dependency. Also, I could not get the vboxdriver to work. Found out after digging I had to install ‘make’ and ‘kernel-source’. Otherwise /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup failed for me.

The second part had to do with the rpms YaST shows when you use software
managment. It has a default kernel module or a pae kernel module. also a
rpm for xorg mouse/keyboard. Wasn’t sure if they are needed with the SUN
version.

yes I new about the above mentioned dependencies. I checked yesterday and
they are all installed on my system. I notice in the manual I downloaded
from SUN they mention a couple other Dependencies, I have not checked them
yet.

A possible alternative would be to install the printer on the host
system, share it via CUPS, and access it as a network printer from
inside the VirtualBox VM. That way, the system inside the VM wouldn’t
need to know about USB at all.
I have virtualbox installed in 3 different distros. The only thing I can say about it with respect to USB support is that it is consistently inconsistent. Every time I boot up I have no idea if I will have full access, partial access, or no access at all, it really does vary with every boot.
This is frankly useless, though not quite as useless as Wine, with that you have not doubts - you will never get access to USB devices.
I really wish somebody could sort this out, but it seems they can’t at least at the moment.

Here I was thinking that it just my installation! I vote for the shared
printer solution - that avoids the problems.
