Virtual OpenSUSE 11.2 on VMWare Server 2.0

Hi forum,

Yesterday I could install OpenSUSE 11.2 on a virtual machine created on VMWare Server 2.0 using recommended settings. Installation was succesfully and even was installing using the NET iso (so I was able to use the virtual network and everything).

After installation it was impossible to start the virtual machine because once the starting is finishing, the desktop doesn’t response to any event (no mouse no keyboard).

So, I tried to work in the “safe mode” and the same.

Lastly, I’m using OpenSUSE 11.2 with Gnome.

Because I didn’t see anything similar over the Internet I have decided to post this issue.

Thanks and I’ll be waiting for someon who can help!!!

Can you verify that keyboard/mouse are working before th GUI starts? I.e., when you see the splash screen, can you hit Esc to make the processes appear on the underlying console?

Uwe

Sorry but I didn’t explain properly before… really the virtual machine starts fine but finally doesn’t response to keyboard or mouse.

Before the GUI starts no problem.I’m able to interact with GRUB in graphical and console mode.

Any idea of what is happening?

Thanks in advanced!

  • djlinux,

when the system boots, add the option “3” without the quotation marks. This way it will boot into runlevel 3, without GUI. Now login as root and run “sax2”. Normally this shouldn’t be necessary any more with 11.2, but maybe this is an exception. Configure the X server and especially mouse and keyboard. Does it make any difference?

Uwe

It’s good to know how to run other runlevels to access the console.

So, once log into the console as root, I started yast2 and checked everything there. Because I don’t the problem with the X server, I’m not able or I don’t what configuration I should change. By the way the only thing changed was the mouse to ps2 instead of imps2.

I have checked the log for the Xorg as well in order to detect something wrong but no errors there.

Other thing I did was to start sax2, but the same: no keyboard and no mouse. When I was younger I used to configure X server manually or using tools like Xconfigurator. In this way I was able to probe different hardware configurations. Is there any way to do this here?

Do you know what can I do to know more about what is happening?

buckesfeld, thank you very much for your help!

Have you installed the guest addons to the os? This is normally done to provide proper drivers to the guest VM hadrware.

Hope to get some guidance on a much lower-level issue. I’m a complete novice to Linux and I’m trying to get openSUSE to work within a MS Virtual PC 2007 environment. The host OS is Windows 7 Professional. The installation, for the most part, seems to have gone smoothly, but SUSE can’t see the outside world. Is there a guidance manual written for fools like me that specifically addresses running Linux within a Microsoft VM?

MikeFI, I think it should be better to start a new thread with your request because it is no related with my problems, and future people visiting this could be a little bit confused.

Regarding my problem I found part of the solution here:

no keyboards no mouse - openSUSE Forums

But now the problem is when working in GNOME each time I type some key, the key is typed twice (aa bb cc, and so on). I’m still looking for a solution (I have tried to remove repeating key from hardware configuration but no fixing at all)

I’ll keep you informed about my progress and I hope this information can be useful for someone in the future.

Bye

I got it, this fixed the keyboard problem:

Control center->Assistive technologies->keyboard accessibility-> In “Slow keys” section enable the “Only accept long key presses” and set delay to the minimum value (short).

It seems to be working fine; I’ll adviced you if something goes wrong again.

Thank you very much for your help!!!
