Virtual Desktops disappear in SUSE 42.2 Leap

Hi, I’ new here and my grammar/english writing is not the best, it’s not my first lingo.
I use OpenSUSE for several years, mainly do recommended updates and install/tweak stuff not to much.
If I run in problems I Google and look for solutions I can follow up step by step.
I’m not a pro-hacker but feel comfortable to move around under guidance so to say.

The last 2 days I did upgrade (offline with burned DVD) a desktop from 13.1 to 13.2 (went ok with the usual nVidia driver drama)
after that I upgrade to openSUSE Leap 41.1 and got greeted by a black desktop, managed to get into ice, did the nVidia routine in Yast and had it running, some tinkering was required for sound to work.
Finally last night I did the next step from 42.1 to 42.2 and face several issues. Initial I had the “usual” again with nVidia, was able to solve that in recovery mode.
My system of KInfo Center:

KDE Plasma V 5.8.6
KDE Framew. V 5.26.0
Qt V 5.6.1
Kernel V 4.4.57-18.3-default
OS Type 64-bit

Hardware:
Processors: 8x Intel Core i7-3770 CPU @ 3.40GHz
Memory: 15.6 GiB of RAM

Graphics: nVidia GK106 Geforce 660

Problem I I got: No audio with videos, no matter if VLC media player or Kaffeine, .mp4, .mkv or .avi videos
I can run Amarok and play .mp3 files, I get also the test sounds when in Yast >> Hardware >> Sound at card #0 Intel ( Configured as sound card number 0 - Driver snd-hda-intel)

I do get NO testsound at card #1 nVidia (Configured as sound card number 1 Driver snd-hda-intel)
Where or what should I look for??

Problem II: Virtual desktops

I try several times, set to 6 virtual desktops and they work as I want with different browsers opn so I can jump around.
However, when I reboot they all gone and I’m back to default with 2 desktops.
How do I address this situation?

Thanks for any pointers.

Welcome to openSUSE Forums Paceno. Please note that it is best to create individual threads for each issue you need assistance with. Otherwise, it can lead to a very confusing thread. So, we’ll stick to discussing virtual desktops here, and you should start another thread for the audio issue.

I don’t use virtual desktops, so hopefully someone who does can comment further here. Having said that I just created 6 desktops, applied then rebooted and they’re all still available so I’m not sure why that doesn’t work for you.

I’m not really sure I understand you. your title is Virtual desktops yet you don’t mention them in your post?
you said nvidia chip and i7 cpu
is that a desktop?
if so is the nvidia chip set as the preffered gpu in bios
if not do it, then install the nvidia drivers from the nvidia repo no need for recovery mode or messing with the binary blob from nvidia.com
afik if there is a crash in kwin5 plasma 5 disables compositing and kwin has a lot of known issues with kwin5
if that is a laptop you need bumblebee not the nvidia driver found from yast and as that is a dual gpu system you need to disable intel’s gpu that’s done in bios by selecting pci express as the preferred graphic processor

I did mention them as the second problem

yes is desktop.
Hardware info is of KInfoCenter on desktop
Processors: 8x Intel Core i7-3770 CPU @ 3.40GHz
Memory: 15.6 GiB of RAM

I did add the graphic card info as I assume there is a relation to video without audio
It was a mistake of mine to address 2 different issues in one post AND in wrong order.
Want happen again

I just rebooted again and same again, back to 2 virtual desktops.
I’ll keep your advise in mind >> “…it is best to create individual threads for each issue you need assistance with”

Multi media problems be sure you do the vendor switch to packman

Virtual Desktops - you now run KDE5 not 4 anymore things change. But you should still be able to set some I use 4 never tried 6 but KDE people now want you to use Activities over Virtual Desktops. Note you can not have different background on the VT anymore also not different Widgets on them

I’m not sure and I will not spend anymore time investigate WHY the virtual desktops disappear for exact the reason you named.
One of the first things I did was vendor switch to packman, so that’s done.
If found out, as you wrote, no more different backgrounds and different Widgets.

I did find the 3rd post at “Activities vs Virtual Desktops” https://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=139142 very helpful and it works just fine for me now incl. different wallpapers
The audio issue I posted about has also been solved. So this thread could be removed or locked, not sure how moderators act with such here.

Thanks for the reasonable replies

We generally just leave the thread as is for others to build on if desired. Glad to read that things are now working as you like.

Actually, you can, with the wallpaper switcher tray applet. At least it’s working here in Leap 42.1. No different widgets, thou.

See GitHub - martenjj/wallpaperswitch: A virtual desktop wallpaper switcher for KDE Plasma 5

There’s a pre-compiled package for 42.2 at http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/kill_it/openSUSE_Leap_42.2/
