Viewing PDFs with Adobe Reader in Konqueror

How do I view PDFs with Adobe Reader when I click on the file in Konqueror? When I click on the PDF in Konqueror, the PDF is viewed with KPDF. When I click on a PDF on the desktop, the PDF is viewed in Adobe Reader. I would like to view any PDF I click on with Adobe Reader as the default, instead of right clicking and selecting “Open With…”

In the file associations option in “Configure Konqueror” and “Configure Desktop,” I moved Adobe Reader 8 to the top of the “Application Preference Order” list for file type PDF. So I don’t understand why everytime I click on a PDF Konqueror it won’t go to Adobe Reader 8.

It will be in the control center

I’m in kde4 at the moment so can’t just check where. But it will be in there.

File viewing inside Konqueror starts the corresponding viewer “part”, a kind of plugin. These plugins are set at the “Embedded” tab is File Association settings module of KControl, not the “General” tab which manages only the standalone applications.

In my system the plugin choices for .pdf files listed are KPDF, Netscape Viewer and KGhostView. There is no acroread plugin, so I think you can’t do it, at least not easily. Maybe there is some way to use the acroread plugin for firefox, I don’t know.

From konqueror a left-click will open the embedded viewer if one exists (KPDF in my case), if not it will open the standalone application (acroread). However, if you click with the middle button (mouse wheel) it will open the file directly on the first standalone viewer (acroread in this case), or in the second standalone reader if no embedded part exists. It’s better than right-clicking and choosing “Open with”.

I appreciate the very informative reply. You’re correct; clicking the third mouse button on a PDF inside Konqueror will open the file inside Adobe Reader. But it sounds like there is no way to make this work by clicking on the primary (left) mouse button. Perhaps the openSUSE developers will reprogram this in figure updates.

Not sure we’re talking the same thing.

You can set konqueror to open a PDF in acroread with a left-click, just disable the embedded part in file associations. What you can’t do, AFAIK, is to see the PDF inside konkeror with an embedded acroread plugin, like in firefox.

Sorry for the misunderstanding; now I get it. In the embedding tab for the proper file type in file associations, I selected “Use settings for ‘application’ group” instead of “Show file in embedded viewer.” Now PDF files with a left click in Konqueror will open with Adobe Reader. Thank you for clearing this up.

You’re welcome

made Adobe reader default: worked (Gnome) - openSUSE Forums

I edited the file

/var/cache/gio-2.0/defaults.list

that has preferences in it; would that be of any use to you?
