videoland- gnome vs qt

i have openssuse 11.4 installed kde 4.6.0.0

when i search on yast online updates for vlc

i get three options vlc-gnome or vlc-qt or vlc-nox which one goes with opensuse kde
difference between gnome vs qt?

Im using VLC under gnome and xfce, and I believe it has QT interface.
Maybe VLC-gnome package is not an interface just GNOME integration, like systray icon and drag n drop?

first, you should not be searching using YaST Online
Updates…instead, start up YaST > Software Management and search for
vlc, i believe you will find “vlc Video Lan Client” and if you single
left click on that, then YaST will pull in the needed other packages
(called dependencies) you need…actually, it will tell you other stuff
is needed and ask you if it is ok that the extras are installed…answer
yes!

kde is built on qt, so i would expect it to automatically pull in vlc-qt
to match up with your KDE (if you also have installed gnome, it will
also fetch all the stuff needed for a gnome install…

thats (important) good to know downloading from software management.

do i also uninstall, remove programs using software management especailly the two or three programs i installed with online updates?

in software management it has vlc and vlc-gnome and vlc-qt, i remember i picked kde when i installed it so i guess i pick qt or do i just pick vlc and it will also installed the vlc-qt as well?

thanks

if i pick just vlc a pop up pops and say nothing provides libfluidsynth.so.1… conflict resolution dont installed or break vlc by ignoring…

so i guess i dont installed just the vlc option and check the vlc -qt one

maybe you need to read a little more about this operating system, like:

http://en.opensuse.org/Concepts
http://en.opensuse.org/Concepts_package_management (and all the others
listed near the top of the page: Multimedia - Interface - Directory
structure - Networking - Printing - Security - Hardware)

so, normally online updates provides only security patchs and major bug
updates for the software you have installed (like, if you have firefox
and a security patch for firefox is released it will show up in online
update)…so, everything offered in YaST Online Update should normally
be installed…

now, the same is NOT true for what shows up in Kpackagekit (the thing in
your task bar)…disable it, it is broken and should not be used! always
use YaST > Online Update (aka: YOU)

so, to answer your question: anything you installed with YaST Online
Update should be just fine…leave it alone…(i said you should not be
searching for stuff to initially install in YOU…)
