Behind the scene we are working on improving the Multi-media experience and one avenue I am looking along, is to remove VideoLan repo from the community options in YaST.
It is preferred if you only answer this question if you know why we want it removed in the first place.
You are advocating removal of a repository associated with a well-known project (VideoLan) and replacing it with a buried repository on a website that describes itself as not officially related to the openSUSE project or Novell, Inc.
I have no knowledge of the individuals behind opensuse-guide.org so how can I trust that the version of libdvdcss they provide is not modified in any way?
FYI; The opensuse-guide url has been part of the Community’s kde multimedia OneClick for some time and the Gnome OneClick has just been changed from the VideoLan to opensuse-guide too. ( 1-click-collection - openSUSE Community Wiki )
Although they are having some issues there ATM: I think they might have it sorted now.
I think that statement deserves a response. Packman packages provide additional functionality which may conflict with packages from other repositories. Packages installed from the VideoLan repository on an openSUSE system, without packages from the Packman repository, are unlikely to be problematic. It is the Packman repository that introduces incompatibilies into a system. Users should be aware of this.
And that is just your personal opinion. What might not be relevant for you could be useful to someone else.
There is an element of truth in what you say: “Packages installed from the VideoLan repository on an openSUSE system, without packages from the Packman repository, are unlikely to be problematic”
Except a very high percentage of users, use Packman
The point of this Poll and work I am involved in - Is to remove a persistent problem for by far the majority (particularly inexperienced) users. You, I have to say are by a long way a ‘Unique case’.
You have started an counter argument, in effect for a tiny minority and I don’t really see it as helpful.
That is not my intention. I hope my posts are seen as factual and useful. They were intended to:
Inform you of my concern regarding the use of a, potentially, untrusted repository and the possibility that modified packages could be distributed to unknowing users.
A further concern that One-Click is being proposed to deliver packages from this repository which can, in itself, pose additional security risks.
To correct a statement that inferred that the VideoLan repository was errant because packages from it don’t integrate well with those from the Packman repository.
I see you efforts as worthy of merit but I would not want new users to fall into the mindset of trusting the One-Click button implicitly without understanding that it can be used maliciously.
It’s true that most users here use Packman, are actively encouraged to do so for multimedia support, and Videolan WILL REMAIN a choice for them in the event of its removal from the all-embracing community 1-click.
May I suggest changing the thread title, as it doesn’t mention community or 1-click, and gives the impression that the Videolan repo is being removed as an openSUS facility.
I don’t understand peoples problem with this. I only used the VideoLAN repo till I learned enough to start using packman. Plus packman is more then just multimedia support, it’s the repo I get the drivers for my wireless card from.
If I reply just “Yes” I get: The message you have entered is too short. Please lengthen your message to at least 10 characters. So, I include this just to be able to reply.
I have voted for yes at the question Are you happy to see the removal of the VideoLan repo from the Community options in Yast?
To the thread title Do You Use the VideoLan Repo? I say now NO. I used it in the past, but I experienced many conflicts; in the end I removed it.
