I recently upgraded to 11.1 64 bit on my Dell XPS m1530 and I’m experiencing some strange video problems. I have a 256mb Nvidia 8600 GT. After I login and before my window manager starts I either see a bunch of white boxes and static or some random icons and window fragments (depending on if I’m logging in for the first time of if I have logged out and then I’m logging back in) that go away once the window fragments go away.
I have tried a few windows managers and I’ve noticed the following behavior:
If I use any type of compositing my window manager will freeze randomly after a few seconds to several minutes.
If I use KDE 4 I get a bunch of random static or other strange image distorting (it is much worse if compositing is on then off, but happens either way). And KDE 4 will freeze randomly with compositing off as well as on.
The only 3D game I have tried so far is UT 2004 which will close randomly before I can finish a game.
I have tried both the nvidia drivers that load from yast and trying to download the latest ones from nvidia’s site but I see the same behavior either way.
If anyone has any ideas on how I can fix these problems I’d greatly appreciate it.
Thanks,
Darren

I also get lines similar to these in my /var/log/messages when I have problems:

I compiled the Nvidia 180.25 driver and installed it. It solved a few issues wrt restarting x when logging out, suspend/hibernate and a few other minor issues. Anyway it runs smoothly with NVS 140.The gobbled screen issue when the driver is activated is still there, but not as bad as it was.

180.22 is what I’ve tried and I still have the same problems with it.

Where did you get 180.25 from? I’m only seeing 180.22 on their site.
Thanks,
Darren
