Hi, i’m facing a really strange video problem on my Dell Mini 10, the screen sometimes not fit the screen, like it’s bigger.
Opensuse can ajust sometimes the borders, but bios and other os cant do the same
i’ve tried to find a answer even with the dell support where they just asked me to try to update bios (which is up to date)

I’ll add some pictures for you to understand better
(and i’m not sure, but it started after the netbook went on hibernate)
Thanks for any help.
I’m not sure if i can post this type of link but here is the picasa album with pictures of my problem

The OP says that this even happens for BIOS. It cannot even be something
which has to do with any driver if that is correct.

If that even happens outside the operating system and also affects how
the bios is shown it is a hardware issue. Since the BIOS update which
was proposed to you did not help give it back to were you have it from
for repair or replacement.

Well exactly. (I actually took that comment with a grain of salt, as some users get confused with BIOS and framebuffer driven boot screen anyway). My thoughts are with the connected display device, which is why I sought more clarification.

Yes, this could well be a hardware fault.

And it is the duty of the manufacturer or retailer to find that out and
correct it not a forum. Except it is with a external monitor and not the
notebook screen which you anyway asked if it is one or the other.

The pictures the OP posted show it also with windows and it is the
netbook screen itself. I just saw now the posted pictures on picasa

On opensuse the image appear fine, only sometimes the system can’t adjust it.
But on bios and windows the screen is always in that
I can’t understand why opensuse works fine and the rest dont, if i plug on another screen, the image on new screen is also fine, on Bios and on Windows, only the netbook screen has this problem

So you have no problem with openSUSE, you have a problem with Windows?
When you boot into windows what resolution does it tell you in the
display settings (correct would be something around 1024x600 or similar)
your screens look like it has 1024x768 and cuts of the lower 168 pixel,
can you change that setting?

You’re right, the resolution that appear is 1024 x 768
but i can’t change to right one
I’ve restarted and when booting Opensuse an error shows up, saying that EDID or something ir wrong
I’ll try another contact with costumer support from dell, but i’m sure it isn’t a hardware problem, but i cant figure what exactly it is

That points to a possible hardware problem, the EDID is the information
from the screen which tells the operating system the info about size and
resolution. I do not understand much about the details of netbook
hardware, I am not a technician but a consumer of hardware. A wild guess
is that the cable which connects the netbook screen to the graphics card
has a problem and the EDID info is lost or corrupted, this guess from my
side can of course be complete nonsense.

Since that happen, i tried to change the resolution to 1024x600 now, my opensuse gots wrong resolution and wont change back, i’ve tried to add on xrandr a new resolution but when i could, the screen leaves a blank space

What did you do exactly? Please describe precisely the steps so that we
can help you (which files did you change, which commands with which
options did you call and what was the output or what did you click in
your gui?).

ok, here is exactly what i’ve done
~> gtf 1024 600 60
# 1024x600 @ 60.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 37.32 kHz; pclk: 48.96 MHz
Modeline "1024x600_60.00" 48.96 1024 1064 1168 1312 600 601 604 622 -HSync +Vsync
~> xrandr --newmode "1024x600_60.00" 48.96 1024 1064 1168 1312 600 601 604 622 -HSync +Vsync
~> xrandr --addmode LVDS1 "1024x600_60.00"
~> xrandr --output LVDS1 --mode "1024x600_60.00"
After that resolution is changed to the right proportion but with a black margin above

I have seen mentioned that the native resolution seems to be 1024 x 576
can you try gtf with that resolution if gives you a better mode (if it
works at all)?

I’ve managed a little workaround, when i change the settings on xrandr and restart X everything works fine…
It’s not a solution, but as i dont use windows at all… its ok for me
Thanks martin for the help
