Video on VAIO SRX77

I am brand spankin’ new to Linux and have just installed 11.1 on my beloved VAIO laptop. It has been something of a struggle to get any version of SUSE installed mostly dealing with inability of installation to understand where the media was. In any case, it is running.

My first issue is with the GUI screen size. At 800 X 600, the desktop is small with about a 1" black frame on all sides. At 640 X 480 the frame is about 1.5" on all sides. I want the image to fill the screen. I can select several different monitor types that all give me desired resolution at 1024X768 and which in TEST mode fill the screen display properly. However, on reboot, even though the changed settings seem to have been saved, the screen always returns to the “framed” display.

Interestingly, during reboot, the mouse cursor appears before the desktop and I can move the cursor to all four corners of the physical display, but by the time the desktop actually appears, it’s back in the frame.

The detected graphics card is the Intel L815, and I’ve tried various monitor types all with the same result.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Peter.

Hello,

I’ve just intalled on two different Sony Vaio laptops in the past couple of days (getting good at slowly converting my friends to linux  ) Anyways, they were both smaller display notebooks and there were two ways I could get the displays right:

  1. Try using Sax2 (Yast>Hardware>Graphics Card and Monitor) then choose the Sony>Vaio VGN TX1XP Monitor then choose 1280x768 (WXGA)

  2. Reinstall with the DVD and upon the boot screen coming up (with options to install, check media, mem check, etc…) hit f3 and change the resolution to 1280x768.

I can’t remember the exact graphics cards in those laptops but I do remember they were using intel graphics cards as well.

Hope this helps!

Ian

OK.

Tip 1 worked well and I have use of the entire display. As it happened, I did need to reinstall, so I was able to try Tip 2, but F3 only gave a choice between TEXT and VESA.

Thanks a million.

Glad to be of some assistance

and Welcome to openSUSE!
