Video issues with Intel 865 G device

I’ve got a strange problem with the display output from Wine using an Intel
865 G onboard video. Machine is an HP 32 bit desktop @2.6Ghz, 1.5Gb memory

  • can’t call the exact model just now.

I just updated from 11.2 -> 11.4 and What I’m seeing is that the Wine
displays are subtly different now - window elements have noticably larger
outlines and certain listboxes display completely black (which makes for
rather useless listboxes). ISTR some problems with that 865 chipset but I
haven’t been able to track anything down. Does this ring a bell with
anyone?

But we can assume that 11.2 worked OK?

If /home/will* (*username?) was brought from 11.2
Have you considered testing a new user login, install some_app.exe in wine and see…

That’s today’s agenda, if I can keep moving. I’m about as far as I can go
until I can physically plant my fanny in front of the machine.

One additional piece of info from last night strengthens my suspicion of the
video system. When I login remotely to the machine via vnc, I see none of
the video problems and the problem child runs pretty much as I expect. The
plan is to reduce the color depth of the display and see what happens - I’m
really beginning to miss Sax2 since this is not really straight forward and
I haven’t tried it since Sax2 went away. I could swear I saw some
discussion of similar problems with the Intel devices but I’ll be darned if
I can locate it.

I’m not familiar with the 865
But your suspicions sound familiar

Try search here
Search - openSUSE.org

I finally found the thread I was looking for - one oldcpu participated in
about 50-device.conf - back in May. Just what I was looking for, so a
belated thanks!

Was that this thread: Vido problems with 11.4 32 bit & the Intel 865 Graphics controller ?

I’m also ‘struggling’ a bit with another user with the 865G in this thread: OpenSUSE 11.4 running into black screen when starts not in FailSafe mode but it is not yet clear to me that they typed ‘intellegacy’ correctly in the 50-device.conf in response to a test I asked them to run. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

Will Honea, are you doing anything special with your 50-device.conf, 50-monitor.conf, or xorg.conf files to get graphics to work for you ? What driver are you using ?

Thanks !

That’s the one.

I’m having to do most of this long-distance so I won’t be able to judge the
real success until I either get someone sitting at the console or make the
trip myself. What I can tell you is that the boot and xorg logs both
indicate major changes and additional processing when I add either ‘Driver
“Intel”’ or ‘Driver “Intellegacy”’ to the 50-device.conf file. In either
case, the vnc session is noticeably more responsive with either but I can’t
see the local result from here.

My problem appears to be a mapping issue with graphics - borders are
smudged, some controls get the wrong background (black print on a black
background usually). This was not a problem up through 11.2 thus my focus
on the drivers. I should get over there tomorrow so I’ll pass along
whatever I find.

Update: ‘Driver “Intellegacy”’ got us past the major issues with the
listbox controls from wine. There are still some minor issues with
artifacts on the screen but overall using the legacy driver seems to get a
usable display. Next time I’m over, I plan to try forcing a lower color
depth and see what that does for the random artifacts but for now we’re back
in business.
