I have recently downloaded and tried to install OpenSUSE 11.3 on our IBM server. I have installed a 3rd party PCI Video card, it is an ATI Rage XL chipset card. The card works fine all the way through the install but at just after GRUB… forget it!
I have looked into this and found that setting the nomodeset parameter at GUB is supposed to take care of this in some instances. However this time, still not booting.
If I try to install OpenSUSE on this Server with the onboard video ATI ES1000, it also works fine, however this video controller on the system board is limited to 1024x764. Not good with a 19" LCD.
I have installed both SLES 11 SP1 and SLED 11 SP1 64bit on this server with this video card and both work fine. So I know there is no issue with the card. Can anyone give any solution?
Can you access the hard drive from another OS/Distribution ? and if so, copy the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file and paste it on the susepaste web site SUSE Paste and press create and then provide here the URL/web address where that file’s contents are now copied. That log file may show what the problem is.
The same applies there. Copy the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file and paste it on the susepaste web site SUSE Paste and press create and then provide here the URL/web address where that file’s contents are now copied. That log file may show what the problem is.
Typically in Linux, one way to figure out what the problem might be is to look at the appropriate log files.
Sir thank you for the response. I currently have this server configured as dual-boot with partition 1 as SLED 11 SP1 and the 2nd partition as OpenSUSE 11.3, so I do have access tot he HD from the SLED installation. I have logged onto that and am using to make this reply now. I am using SusePaste to give you a look at the XORG.O.Log for both installations:
SUSE Paste This is the SLED 11 SP1 system SUSE Paste This is the OpenSUSE 11.3 system
I do not have any OS/Distro installed which is configured to use the onboard ATI ES1000 chipset, so cannot paste a log for that.
I just noticed at the top of both logs it reports them both as ‘OpenSuse’ Why is that?
Since it says that, now I am not sure which log is for each install/system. Maybe you can tell which is which from the information in each log.
OK, so in both cases I see the mach64 video driver loaded.
Its easy to tell which one is SLED and which one is openSUSE. Look at the kernel version. 2.6.32.27-0.2-default = sled … and 2.6.34-12-desktop = openSUSE.
Was there any particular reason you elected to stick with 2.6.34-12-desktop instead of 2.6.34-12-default on your openSUSE ? If it were me, I would have tried hard to keep them similar and I would have used the 2.6.34-12-default on openSUSE.
From what I can see, your SLED has more X loading errors:

Hence IMHO openSUSE-11.3 should (possibly with some tuning) provide a better graphics experience.
Looking at the errors, I would focus on the DRI errors. Did you follow the advice in the openSUSE-11.3 release note? Boot openSUSE-11.3 to run level 3 with nomodeset (ie type ‘3 nomodeset’ as a boot option in the grub boot menu), and run “yast” with root permissions (you can run yast in text mode with root permissions if X window not available) and navigate to yast > System > /etc/sysconfig Editor > System > Kernel > NO_KMS_IN_INITRD and change it to “yes”. This takes a minute or two to save once changed is submitted. There is an image / example in the 4th thing to try of that graphic guide I’ve quoted/linked. Then restart with ‘shutdown -r now’ and try again with and also without nomodeset.
The kernel installed (2.6.34-12) is the OOTB kernel from the 11.3 install (specifically, 2.6.34-12.3). I had a lot of problems with an ATI Radeon just after the install, and booted in “failsafe” mode, applied the outstanding updates (to kernel 2.6.34.7-0.5/0.7) and was able to boot.
oldcpu enquired
Does it boot with Fail Safe settings?
Have you attempted this “failsafe” boot" ?
As to the ATI Rage XL vs. ATI ES1000, the Rage XL is actually an older card, superseded by the ES1000. There are many linux-related problems with the Rage XL dating as far back as 2005.

It might be easier to chase a resolution problem (1024 x 764) on a working system than to chase a more difficult “no video” problem. Further, it is possible that the Rage XL cannot support the (more modern) 19" monitor.
