Hello,
I recently re-installed tumbleweed (KDE/Gnome), and had everything working fine. I usually use KDE but wanted to try Gnome, and when my system became unusable last week I reinstalled both kde & gnome. Since the install and initial loading of programs I use, I have made no changes to system settings & software, except for updates.
When I booted up the other day to KDE one of my monitors was in a odd mode (4x3 & does not use whole monitor) and sharp image as usual , the other was in 16x9 (fit whole monitor) but super low resolution but still readable. The monitors are no longer individual monitors, but mirrors of each other. The boot screen and login screens are fine.
If I boot to Gnome, everything work fine, both monitors work individually & images are super crisp.
Can someone help me troubleshoot the KDE as that is my preferred DE?
Thanks in advance
John KIlbert
There’s a couple of things to look at:
- Systemsettings - Display and Monitor
- Create a new user, log that user in on KDE and see if the result is the same. If not, the culprit is in your homedir
Thank you for your reply.

Systemsettings - Display and Monitor
I should have mentioned all looked fine there, just was not correct to what was happening on the displays. -

This fixed it!
a few follow up ?, if you do not mind:
Is there a way to copy the new configuration (of the user video settings) back to my original login name, or do i have to copy over all my documents/bookmarks etc… to the new user?
IS there a way to tell what happened so I can prevent it from happening again? I must be unknowingly doing something wrong, as I recently reinstalled a week ago (6/10 or 11) because my system got unusable in the same manner (just using and installing updates) a week ago.
Thank you for helping me fix my issue so quickly.

Be sure you use systemsettings5 the 4 version may also be installed
I am running 5.6.4-1.1 (seems to be the latest)
thanks for helping!

Yes but you may also have the one from KDE4 since some things had not ported at the time of 42.1 release
Best would be to find out which kde config file contains the display settings. Removing that whilst being logged out ( logged in as the new user using root permission ) should be enough.
That would be like this:
sudo rm -rf /home/YOURNORMALUSERNAMEHERE/.local/share/kscreen
(enter root password when prompted for )
Next, logout as the new user, login as yournormaluser and you should see the same as the new user.
All is good, only have 5 installed, and only 5 shows in the repository i am subed to.
thanks
Awesome, this worked perfect.
I was needing to chown chmod everything as I could not write to my drives as the new user, but this prevented all that.
Thanks to you guys for the help!
