vga mode and black screen

hi everybody
what vga-mode should I choose to install openSUSE? I own a HP 22" Monitor (w2207h) with a 1680*1050 resolution and a NVIDIA 8600GTS.
During installation, I get a black screen and nothing happens anymore.
Does anyone has had the same problem?
I would be very thankful, please help!

Gilles

To avoid the difficulty it’s having with the video (until you get it installed, when you can fix it) boot off the install DVD and select the F# key whcich gives you several video modes. Try first the VESA mode for installation. If that plays up too, then try the “Text Mode” mode.

It seems that it has worked somehow to install opensuse, but I cannot start it using GNOME. someone in this forum told me to edit the /etc/inittab so that it boots in a non-graphic mode. now ma computer boots and i get the cammand line where ican login and browse the directorues…
what do I have to do next??

Log into that command line as root. Then try this command: sax2. That should cause a self-configuration of the video. After that finishes enter this: startx to start the GUI.

If that fails try it again but with these two slightly different ones:
sax2 -m 0=vesa and of course, startx.

If that fails try it again but with these two slightly different ones:
sax2 -a and of course, startx.

If that fails try it again but with these two slightly different ones:
sax2 -1 and of course, startx.

The thing is to get a GUI going and then install the NVIDIA drivers. And then use Yast to fine tune the screen configuration.
