Very slow internet

Hi all,
I’m new to open SUSE and need some help. I’ve been running PCLINUX OS for the past several years. I have just set up a dual / boot system and open SUSE is running very slow with anything that has to do with the internet. In fact I’m using my PCLINUX install to do this post. I’m using ver 11.4, if I should change to a new version please let me know and which one should I use.

Thanks KenB

At this point, I don’t know anything about your networking hardware. There is a speed test you can use here for your Internet speed:

Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test

You can test your speed in different Linux distros to see if there is a difference and since openSUSE 12.1 has just been released I highly recommend you give it and its much newer kernel 3.1 a test drive to see if it helps.

Thank You,

Some people have to disable IPv6.

and/or change the domain name server in /etc/resolv.conf to
nameserver 8.8.8.8
nameserver 8.8.4.4

those are free to use Google domain name servers which are correctly
setup to work with IPv6…it may help…

otherwise, you probably need to give some more info on your particular
setup…like, are you using network manager?

is yours wi-fi or wired? is there a great difference between the speed
of the two? (if wireless, switch to that forum, read the three stickies
at the top and then post again with the requested output to the wireless
forum)

if you have the same speed problems both wired and wireless then
please show us the input/output of these commands in a terminal

/sbin/ifconfig -a
ping <your-router-IP-address>
/sbin/route -n
ping 8.8.8.8
nslookup forums.opensuse.org
ip addr
ip route
ip -s link
grep '^^#]' /etc/resolv.conf

copy/paste the in/output back to this thread using the instructions
here: http://goo.gl/i3wnr

and, hopefully a real networking guru (i am not) can fix you up…
