Hi there !
I just manually updated my opensuse 11.2 installation. This update included
the xorg-x11-driver-video-radeonhd driver from version 1.3.0_20091026
to 1.3.0_20100216.
As a result now all graphics operations are very slow, eg. redrawing a large
window takes around 1sec when moving it to another position. With the old
driver is was very smooth. Vlc previously worked very well, now it is
not possible to watch a video even with a low resolution.
I use a Radeon HD 3200 GFX chip which is on the motherboard (Asus)
and additionally I have a separate GFX card (Radeon 3870) in the PCI-E
slot which I don’t use on Linux - just for gaming on Windows :shame:.
I guess I have the same problem as described in this posting:
So laggy after update xorg-x11-driver-video-radeonhd. - openSUSE Forums
but without the network issues.
Unfortunately I can not install the ati drivers as suggested there because
the 3870 GFX card is extremely loud when enabled. For unknown reason
the ati-driver (on windows and linux) does enable it even though it is
not used. (I just enabled the GFX chip that is on the motherboard in
the BIOS and only connected that one to a monitor).
The radeonhd driver doesn’t enable the unused GFX card and it stays
silent (well done radeonhd developers !)
If found a statement in the xorg.log file saying “Card not in database:
0x9610:0x1043:0x83A2; using generic modesetting.” Maybe that is the
reason for the slowdown and the new version of the driver doesn’t
initialize the chip correctly/optimal.
Btw: the 3870 GFX card doesn’t seem to be the problem as I don’t notice
any improvements when removing it. It must be related to the new version
of the xorg-x11-driver-video-radeonhd driver, because when I reinstall the
old version of the package (and just that) the problem is gone.
Does anyone know what to do to solve the problem long term ? Maybe
some magic configuration options ? Should I file a bug report or will
someone from the board do that automatically so that it can be fixed
in future versions ?
The 11.3 release is coming soon and I fear that I will have the same
problems there without the option to downgrade the package…
Thanks guys !
Sorry I couldn’t attach the lspci and xorg logs as the forum software
complained about the post being too long.
