it seems to hang at first for a while before i see it boot up at a normal speed
any fixes for that?

Try adding this to the Boot Options below on the grub menu:
edd=off
If that doesn’t help, after launching the boot, hit the Escape key to see the kernel log. You quite possibly will see where it is being slowed down.
