Vbox 15.6 KDE (EXT4) to 16.0 -> no GUI, no CLI on reboot

Hy!

Upgraded a 15.6 KDE on EXT4 in Virtualbox (Host: TW) to 16.0 with the upgrade tool:

 sudo zypper in opensuse-migration-tool # Available since 15.6
 sudo opensuse-migration-tool

After reboot looks normal until login to GUI:

  • Wayland: screen turns black and back to login screen
  • X11: black screen with mouse cursor, no further progress
  • IceWM: black screen with mouse cursor, no further progress

On other CLI consoles:

  • black screen with blinking cursor, no login

Accessing the Leap 16.0 VM via ssh is not possible, times out, apparently no functional networking, no request for IP via DHCP visible.

I’m a little lost at this point.

(adding nomodeset doesn’t help, btw)…

Lack of VirtualBox packages in Leap 16.0 could be the reason.

But no way to interact with the machine, no CLI, no ssh, no nothing.

Use a LIVE-System and chroot then try to update.

on a VBox install? never done that… i threw it away and got a new trixie VM in the meantime.
