/var/log/gdm/:0.log ate my hard-drive: Mesa 7.6 implementation error

The gdm :0.log filled up my entire root partition. Incredibly, Linux continued to run!

Examined the log and noticed several thousand (million?) occurrences of the following message sequence:

Mesa 7.6 implementation error: bad datatype in interpolate_int_colors
Please report at bugzilla.freedesktop.org
Mesa 7.6 implementation error: Invalid datatype in _mesa_convert_colors
Please report at bugzilla.freedesktop.org

I suspect that something may be wrong with Mesa 7.6.

I’m running OpenSuSE 11.2, 2.6.31.14-0.6, with xfce 4.6.1. /usr/sbin/gdm is dated 2010-09-15 17:12.

did you report the bug? (posting to here does nothing toward resolving
the bug…)

No. It has only occurred three times so far (in the span of a week). I’m waiting for it to occur again, so that I can figure out what may be causing it (by a process of elimination).

I don’t like to clutter up the bug reports with unsubstantiated problems. (Better to clutter up the forums!)

I think I found the offending program: the voronoi screen-saver.

I wrote a bash script that monitors the log size and dumps a ps, fuser, and ls output whenver the log grows.

The fuser, unfortunately, was not helpful – it indicated only that the log was being accessed by Xorg. The ps output was helpful, however. It told me that the voronoi screen-saver was running at the time – and not much else. I ran voronoi twice in preview mode and reproduced the problem both times, each time within five minutes.

I captured the bug in voronoi! – and fed it to bugzilla!

thank you!

in (about) 2001 or so i was having occasional lockups and was advised
to NOT run random screen savers…

i have not since…

along the way i think i’ve learned that while voronoi might kill yours
it might not harm my system at all…nasty stuff inside those many
modules…
