Using Tumbleweed on USB drive everywhere

Hello

I installed Tumbleweed on a USB drive, and, of course, the hardware detection selected Nvidia.

But I’d like to be able to plug my USB drive into any PC (AMD, Intel, etc.) and use Tumbleweed without having to change anything.

Is it possible to install all the drivers (old and new, regardless of the manufacturer) so that Tumbleweed works on any PC I plug my USB drive into?

I’m ready to make a new install if needed with your advice

In another post, Malcomlewis told me to modify initrd, but that’s beyond my skill level.

The no mess way is to just add the boot option on those systems by pressing the “e” key at systemd-boot menu, then down the bottom of the screen is the linuxefi entry, just add nomodeset there and press F10 to boot, graphics will be sub-optimal but should just work.

If it’s intel or AMD, then you likely need to install additional libvulkan or intel tools, having these installed will have no impact on your primary setup, since there is no hardware present.

Then what about all the other hardware devices, network cards, bluetooth etc…

What is your end goal, just showing someone linux? If so just grab a Live USB image and use that?

Yes, when i use the hardware of my wife, or my daughter : this hardware id old (10 years), no UEFI on these, but Nvidia graphics card using nouveau.

Then what about all the other hardware devices, network cards, bluetooth etc…

I was hoping that during the startup the hardware detection would do the necessary.
Or are you going to tell me I’m dreaming ? :pensive:

Being able to use Tumbleweed myself with my environment and files while being elsewhere: at friends’ houses, with my family or while traveling

If i woul make an install on on other hardware, the ISO’ files are on the stick and the grub have the good parameters in customs40.

Then systemd-boot won’t work, it only supports UEFI, when Grub2 is dropped from Tumbleweed, what are your plans?

It will detect fine, however it may require respective firmware installed.

The only way is to test and see what works, what doesn’t.

In saying that, the is the nova driver coming (not sure when) which should be an improvement over the nouveau driver for GPU’s with GSP eg Turing.

Grub2 will be dropped ? Really ?
So launching ISO’s from the new boot system will no longer be possible?
No plans for the moment : wait and see.

My hardware has UEFI disabled, only legacy.

For nouveau driver, is there an easy way to install it, without to change anything in initrd ?

At some point it will go the way of Xorg…

If you already have grub installed, it will keep on functioning, just won’t get updated or fixed etc…

Not really, I suppose you could run a different snapshot, but a lot of work doing that after a kernel update…

Tumbleweed will move too quick, your better off looking at Leap.

FWIW, I just use a Tumbleweed Rescue USB if need to fire up a computer, every few moths I just update it and install a few additional applications I need, takes but a few minutes…
