Hello.
I have a no-brand TV card based on the bt878 chip.
The card works but whenever I start a TV watching app like kdetv or mootv Linux logs me out without a warning or error message :|.
I know nothing is wrong with the TV card itself so what could be causing this?
openSUSE 11.1 / KDE 4.1 / 64bit
It doesn’t log you out, it crashes X.
You could take a look at .xsession-errors file your home directory as to why it’s crashing. Could be a problem a problem with X, KDE or display adapter drivers.
Thanks for the tip.
I did a search on my harddrives but there is no such file anywhere.
It should exist in your home directory, since it has a . in front of it, it is normally hidden from file managers that do not have show hidden files enabled. You can also look at /var/log/Xorg.* files that contain some of the GUI logfiles. * here meaning something like Xorg.0.log and so forth.
Since you’re running 4.1, are you by any chance running desktop effects and if you are, have tried to use the TV card without the said effects turned on?
There is still no such file. I do have xorg logs though.
This is the newest (I don’t know what to look for in there): pastebin - collaborative debugging tool
I have compiz-fusion and desktop effects always turned off as they only decrease the performance.
Have you tried with the both radeon (open source) and fglrx (the ATI proprietary driver) to see if they both exhibit the same issue?
I’ll be frank (in a non-literal sense) and say I haven’t tried any DVB/Analog enabled devices on ATi chipsets for a long time, after I tossed my 2x1900XTX out of the window (to Windows) for not working on Linux most of the time.
Yes, I tried watching TV before I installed drivers from Ati with the same problem.
Maybe worth noting is the fact that i had the same problem on my previous openSUSE installation.
I did a format and reinstall and the problem stayed.
Edit: I can’t say i have any other problems though. The Ati drivers are working surprisingly well.
Hard to say, I’d point my finger at a bug in X or ATi drivers in that case - I don’t have a reference device to test it on I’m afraid - I only have DVB devices here.
A quick Google gives several results of people with similar problems of the entire X crashing on ATi cards (and kdetv/xawtv)
