Hello all, I have some experience with Linux, but none with openSUSE, you’ll be glad to hear :shame:
I installed 11.3 last week and eventually got nvidia drivers working. I was quite happy how most things were progressing, then the temptation to upgrade to 11.4 got too much >:)
I upgraded today (online, not dvd) and everything went well. On rebooting the desktop came up as normal and all was good.
I installed nvidia and got that working ok.
I then installed Gnome-Shell and couldn’t figure out how to get it working. I’ve been using Fedora recently and the Gnome-Shell option is available at Login.
I then discovered the gnome-shell --replace terminal command and I tried it.
It seemed to load ok, but as I had used the terminal, when I closed the terminal it seems like compiz crashed. I lost all windows borders and nothing was usable. I REISUB’d and started again. On reboot I got a CLI login prompt.
After logging in I tried startx, to no avail. I then tried gdm start and got to the desktop again (not gnome-shell). I Alt+F2’d and ran gnome-shell --replace again and all was good - except no network
I rebooted again, and got the CLI again. Went through it all again and tried to configure network (wireless) no good. I then connected an ethernet cable and tried again. That worked, but I’m not sure why - I didn’t think anything was downloaded. Anyway wireless now works ok - even on reboot. However I’m still getting dumped to the CLI login on restarts.
Can somebody explain why please? I realise I must have missed something, but I don’t know what :’(
Many thanks.
Rule of thumb is check last messages before login prompt
Check /var/log/Xorg.0.log for “EE” error messages.
Check /var/log/messages for errors, tail -n 100 /var/log/messages.
Pls use http://suse.paste to paste output from your results.
It could be an X error.
I think after you installed Gnome-shell it defaults to the Gnome Shell. I had troubles with Compiz freezing that required reboots, or pkill -9 gnome-panel.
Server not found!
I’ll abreviate the output and use code tags, if that’s ok.
Output from Xorg.0.log is too long to post in code tags. oops.

Compiz doesn’t work for me. Ever. Actually, it worked for me better a year
or two ago; in 11.4 it was rubbish.
Gnome-shell I haven’t tried, so I can’t comment.

Nope, I can’t.
However, as you were using 11.3 for only a week, you could consider
installing 11.4 fresh. Otherwise, 11.4 is still very young, I’m sure it has
many undiscovered bugs.
You could try a new user.

Some progress
I D/L’d 11.4 and re-installed from scratch. Everything went smoothly. I updated, installed Nvidia driver - all good
I then installed gnome-shell and rebooted.
It almost worked!
I now get to the desktop - but no gnome-shell.
The last 2 lines of the pre-boot blurb say something like
“failed to acquire org.gnome. something or other”, buit at least I get a network connection now and no bumping me to a CLI login.
Improvements indeed!
Thanks for the help and suggestions, all.
I’ll await further developments!
**@Quakers
I thought I had corrected the link **which should have been SUSE Paste not bad, code is easier.
From your messages post, even when you were at the CLI you were connected to your router as 192.168.0.3.
However, without DNS servers specified so you wouldn’t be able to connect to the Internet, cat /etc/resolv.conf for your nameservers.
OpenDNS provides free nameservers.
Ummm, **“failed to acquire org.gnome. something or other” but its not helpful at all.
**Is it a repository issue?

Thanks for the tip on gnome-shell will install and review it, Win 7 does something similar.
Yes, I thought I was always connected to the router, but I really don’t understand how networks work, so struggled. In every installation I have made, the network always worked straight away, so I’ve never had to wade my way through details
I noticed the link was wrong afterwards

I think it looks ok, but am not experienced in suse repos, so I could be missing something.
By the way, the full message at the end of the text screens at startup is
“failed to acquire org.gnome.display manager”
and that comes right after 2 entries of “starting gdm”
I can now run gnome-shell by using gone-shell --replace in the terminal. It works well, but gives the following errors

This is now solved? Now you’re taken to your gnome sessions instead of a CLI. The only issue is how to make the gnome manager application switch to the gnome-shell.
That’s a problem that is better addressed in the openSUSE Applications subforum.
Yes, it’s pretty much fixed, thanks. I am hopeful that future updates may put things right. We’ll see.
Thanks again
