using clamav and suse live disk to scan windows for virus

when I attempt to scan anything with clamav from a terminal I get the following error:

ERROR: Can’t create temporary directory /var/lib/clamav/clamav-da584cb3f4ee38529f0460ad6f7dc632
Hint: The database directory must be writable for UID 999 or GID 100

Which I take to mean that there are no virus definitions installed. So I use the “freshclam” command. Which results in the following error:

ERROR: Can’t create temporary directory /var/lib/clamav/clamav-da584cb3f4ee38529f0460ad6f7dc632
Hint: The database directory must be writable for UID 999 or GID 100

Am I not able to accomplish this via a live cd?

This mightbe better
Rescue CD

I’d still never trust a win system recovered from a virus though

yeah, this is a stopgap. I intend on reinstalling windows in a few weeks and creating a dual booting setup once I get the time and switching over to suse for the majority of the things I become more familiar with it.

I just really need windows back up in a somewhat functioning state as quickly as possible.

I’m actually already downloading knoppix. But my internet is incrediably slow. I accidently downloaded the german version and couldn’t figure out how to get the virus scan to work do to the language barrier. I thought I would try using the suse live disk I had lying around in the meantime.

I’ve created the knoppix live cd, but I can’t seem to find the virus scan?

is the recover cd you recommended different from knoppix?

Don’t know. I expect so yes.
But why not read this

Good stuff that.

Thanks carl.
