Used to have sound, but lost it

Hi.

I’m new to linux… just set up my Dell Inspiron 9300 to dual boot openSUSE 11.0 and XP.

When I first installed openSUSE, the sound worked in GNOME, but not other applications. So I followed the instructions on the Audio Troubleshooting page. Initially, I could hear the voice when I ran speaker-test, but now I no longer hear the voice… and sound no longer works anywhere.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Open up a terminal and do SU and give your root password. Then do
ALSACONF and run through that utility, accepting all the defaults. If
you hear the test music at the end you should be OK.

If you do not, go into the sound setup in Yast - Hardware and delete the
sound card, and let it find it and configure it again.

Thanks for the quick response! Unfortunately, I tried both of these things… and neither one worked. I still have no sound.

Could I have a Pulse Audio problem?

When I execute

amixer

I get the output

***PULSEAUDIO: Unable to connect: Connection refused
amixer: Mixer attach default error: Connection refused

And when I execute

alsamixer

I get

*** PULSEAUDIO: Unable to connect: Connection refused

alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: Connection refused

What might this mean?

I got around this by removing pulse audio and just using alsa

Glad to read your audio is working now. Thanks for sharing your solution.
