From the 64 bit DVD I chose LXDE as my desktop environment.
Did two update cycles to ensure everything was current.
Did the Nvidia one click install for gf8 and later because I have a Nvidia gtx 470.
After yast finished I rebooted.
Run level 5 comes up and gives me the LXDE desktop and my mouse cursor moves around but I can’t click on anything.
The cursor moves over the buttons but does not activate anything.
I tried some keystrokes as well and the result is nothing.
After a few minutes the mouse cursor stops moving and freezes anyways.
I don’t know how to enter run level 1 from boot so I am pretty much stuck.
Might pursue an explanation on how to add a Modeline to xorg.conf in /etc/X11 after I figure out how to salvage LXDE.
Thanks.
Is this a notebook?

honestly I might crawl back to KDE and not deal with this issue that I am having with LXDE.
basically the only thing I would like to have from the KDE suite is KDEnlive.
Since you can have both does it work with KDE or did you do a LXDE only install? Does it work with nouveau??
Yes, KDE does install from the DVD and is functional with the proprietary Nvidia driver/module.
I assume, but haven’t verified which driver is being used when LXDE installs from the DVD, that the driver is either nouveau or nv but that is not my desired outcome which is to have CUDA/SLI technology implemented with LXDE.
One thing to note is that when the proprietary Nvidia driver is installed on LXDE the keyboard seems totally non-functional and the trackball and keyboard are connected to different ports then both become non-functional after a short duration with the proprietary Nvidia driver/module installed.
As I said you can have both desktops installed so if one does not work try the other. This will either show that one is broken or the problem is else where.
BTW for cuda yiou need the special cuda drivers.
KDE works, I don’t want the additional software that KDE provides.
LXDE works until proprietary Nvidia drivers are installed.
A tandem desktop environment is not desired option.
CUDA is another issue, I cannot load the fundamental Nvidia drivers to view YAST to install CUDA drivers, I haven’t gotten that far.
Paring down KDE simplify it is not a desired approach either.
At this point I am willing to abandon LXDE for KDE but it is not my desired option.
Thank you for your interest.
I think you miss understand having both installed only takes a little extra space on the drive. I don’t suggest you run KDE just install it… There may be some packages needed that KDE provides. In most situation both are installed you use the one you want.
I want my car to fly but unless I weld some wings on it there is no chance.
Better known as “the workaround”…
It is worth a shot…
