Has anyone had any success with accessing stored files on any Olympus Cameras or Digital Recorders, which seem to be accessible only through “Microsoft Widows”? I thought I might have been able to access stored files by installing and running the Olympus access program in Wine but there is no communication through the USB connection. What am I missing or is it not possible?
Any help gratefully received.
I have a Olympus DC 520 and used it with SUSE without doing anything more than plugging in the USB cable. It has worked from 10.0 till 11.2 Kde 3.5 and 4.3 with only one problem when a update back in 10.3 caused it not to be recognized. Once recognized (device plugger pops up a notice), I select either open or d/l photos in DigiKam.
I do not use the Windows provided software. So you would need to post your model of Olympus camera to see if anyone knows of a problem.
It is it acting as a USB mass storage, it will pop up as a drive so that you can copy it in and out. If it recognized as a camera, then the associated program, digikam, should pop up.
As MattBClassic mentioned you may not need that Windoze program here.
My wife had an Olympus camera which could not be accessed other than through the provided software running in Windows. More recent models may well be as you say, certainly the Fuji camera she has now and my own older Minolta are recognised in SUSE as storage devices and can be accessed.
My problem is actually with an Olympus Digital Recorder which so far I can only access through Olympus’ Digital Wave Player running in Windows.
Just take the memory card out and insert it into the
appropriate slot on the PC. If you don’t have one on the PC,
they’re quite cheap, and USB adapters for these are cheap as
well. It’s what I do now in Windows or Linux because it’s so
much easier (and I’ve lost the cable by now anyway).
