USB write permission issue

Hello guys, I am new to this forum so if I have posted this question in wrong forum plz forgive me.

First about my OS I use dual boot vista ultimate 32 bit + Opensuse 11 64 bit. I have set up suse per my needs like installing audio/video codecs and other stuff that I cannot live without. There are 2 main issues which keep me away from preffering suse over vista.:’(

  1. My USB is auto mounted perfectly when it is plugged in. I can copy data from usb to my hdd. But I cannot write data into usb. I am the only user and admin on this comp. I have root permissions but it just doesn’t work. Can you gus help me out since usb is quite imp in my day to day work.

  2. How I can extract from RAR files not by using commands (I am bad at it) but a software in suse?

Tell us what desktop environment you are using:
And what is the USB HD Format type, FAT, NTFS??

In Yast - Software Management, search for: rar, zip, unzip, (many are using peazip)
in kde4 you could use: kde4 extract and compress (but it may only be in 4.1.3)

I am using KDE 4 that comes with opensuse 11.
Both my HDD and USB are ntfs
Sorry if I am going off-topic but should I upgrade to kde version that you mentioned? how can I do it? and what advantages/risks in doing that. I want to tell you that i am using compiz and i don’t want to mess up any settings.

I would upgrade but as for Compiz I would hesitate to give it recommendation. KDE4 desktop effects are sufficient for me.
Many users have upgraded kde4 from the dvd install to Factory - giving kde 4.1.3 at the moment.

You would need to add these repos and do update all in this list unconditionally from Yast Software Management:

KDE4 Factory:

Desktop:
Index of /repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Factory:/Desktop/openSUSE_11.0

Extra:
Index of /repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Factory:/Extra-Apps/openSUSE_11.0

Community:
Index of /repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Community/openSUSE_11.0_KDE4_Factory_Desktop

QT:
Index of /repositories/KDE:/Qt/openSUSE_11.0

If you experience dependency errors when selecting the update in Yast and don’t know what to do. Save the error to file with the expert button in the error box and post it here.
I would switch Compiz off and use kwin until you have done the upgrade.

Most of us also have kde3 and do NOT auto login!!

The write issue to NTFS:

HowTo Mount NTFS Filesystem Partition Read Write Access in openSUSE 10, 11

Worked like a charm rotfl!rotfl!
Thanks a ton !! I am currently downloading peazip and will give it a try.
for that usb issue I searched google and was able to found issues related to mounting of usb and not write permission. Also the article link that you gave me is also very good for many related problems.
What a community, got my answer in 90 min…rotfl!rotfl!

You are welcome. And enjoy suse. It may not always be so quick.
Remember - baby steps. Don’t do too much at one time, then if there is a problem it’s easier to identify.
