I have a crazy idea to share. There is only one LAN port on my laptop on
which I can get connected to the internet. Now I want to share my
connection with my friend on another laptop. Since I have to log on to be
connected, I cannot use a switch. So I was thinking if I could use my USB
port to connect to his laptop so that we can share the connection. Please
suggest on the possibilities.

Well to connect to the internet, one user has to provide a username and
password. Now, if I am that one, then I would need another ethernet port to
connect to the switch so that other users can share it, while my laptop
serves as a server. Now, my laptop has only one ethernet port.
USB-based ethernet-card was precisely what I was looking for but I was under
the impression that they don’t exist due to some frequency mismatch, as a
senior told me. Moreover, USB has 12 mbps speed while ethernet has 100 mbps
speed which disallows, such cards. But, if they exist then my problem would
be solved.
Hi
Why not just get a router/switch that can handle the internet
connection for you? I’m assuming it’s pppoe, I use a linksys WRT54G
which does wireless which is connected to a westell modem in
bridge mode.
Some modems have ethernet as well as USB connections for connecting.
