USB tethering to phone works fine, wireless hotspot from phone not working

Trying to get wireless hotspot from phone to computer working. I can use usb tethering via cable to computer and everything is working fine. I cannot get wireless hotspot from phone to computer to work.

I am a noob…I have read forum and will post code in response to commands that I see being asked in the forum

the code below was obtained while computer was connected to the phone’s hotspot

During this time internet was NOT available.

Please let me know what you think and if any follow up command submissions need to be submitted in order to figure out what is going on…

Much thanks in advance…

The iwconfig output shows that you were connected, and the ping to "google.com"command shows that you did have internet connectivity (at least temporarily)?

The NetworkManager log shows that the connection keep being disconnected and reconnected. Does that reflect the behavior your observing and reporting?

I have tried many times to get on line using the wireless. Occasionally a site (eg duck duck go or google.com) will load but very slowly. I do not think I have ever been able to navigate to a second site successffully. When a site does not load I usually get a message “err_name_resolution_failed”

It is not my phone’s hotspot as I tried that earlier today with another windows PC and it worked fine.

The duplicate packets from your ping command caught my attention…

64 bytes from lax02s23-in-f4.1e100.net (216.58.193.196): icmp_seq=1 ttl=47 time=177 ms (DUP!)
64 bytes from lax02s23-in-f4.1e100.net (216.58.193.196): icmp_seq=1 ttl=47 time=215 ms (DUP!)

…but not likely to be connected with your wifi issue IMHO.

The NetworkManager reason codes can be found here…
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingNetworkManager/ReasonCodes

The “reason 4” and “reason 7” codes are associated with “The device could not be readied for configuration” and “Secrets were required, but not provided” respectively. There have been some recent regressions with the NM version currently used in Tumbleweed, but I’m not sure if this is what is impacting you here.

FWIW…
https://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/533514-Wifi-intermittently-drops-no-secrets-available

Let’s see what others think about this.

I don’t really know if the following might be relevant to your problem but I saw something similar, i.e. frequent disconnection and reconnection to the Wi-Fi router on my phone.
Apparently with default settings the phone keeps jumping over several channels of the 2.4 GHz band, likely a strategy to avoid crowded channels, and NetworkManager is not so fast following those jumps.
While I was able to get at least a workable if slow connection, I had better performance configuring the Wi-Fi router as follows:
> in the router configuration screen tick “Show Advanced Options”
> then set “Transmit on Channel N”, where N might be a number from 1 to 11, instead of the default value of “Auto”; consider changing the N value if you meet with interference from, say, your microwave oven
> save your setting.
That setting might depend on phone model and/or Android version, but you should be able to find something similar.

Hope this helps.

I cannot find a wi fi router advanced setting on my phone…by wi fi router you are referring to the hotpot setup correct? I have no setting that would allow me to change a channel…the only advanced setting I have on my google pixel phone is a setting to select the AP band (2.4 or 5.0 GHz band)

Your log goes from

There’s almost 1 minute there of no output where seemingly everything is fine, until the connection drops. I would suggest turning on debug logging in NetworkManager.conf and observing this output again to see if it points to a more specific cause. I believe you’d do this by editing your /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf and adding this section:

[logging]
level=debug

Then restart NetworkManager (or reboot).

here is the output of:
sudo journalctl -fu NetworkManager after turning on debuf logging in NewtworkManager.conf

No other nearby APs (or even other 2.4GHz microwave sources) that could be causing interference? I noticed that your ‘iwlist scan’ output only shows the Android AP (ESSID:“Pixel”, channel 6), but was that all that is discovered during the scan?

Here is the full output from that iwlist scan (I still had to cut a bit off to fit)

I’m not surprised that you’re experiencing connectivity problems here.

The following may be helpful with respect finding a way to explicitly set a less congested channel…
https://android.stackexchange.com/questions/53181/how-to-set-wifi-channel-for-tethering
https://android.stackexchange.com/questions/8365/how-do-i-change-the-wi-fi-hotspot-channel

@OP,
In your original post, you were able to authenticate and connection set up progressed successfully until there was a failed DHCP response.

In your most recent post running “journalctl -fu” it looks like a problem happened setting up DNS, I’d have been interested in seeing what came later after what you posted (You either gave up trying to connect too early or you didn’t post all of your logging). It’s not uncommon for a connection to need a second or third try to set up completely.

Each logging you’ve posted fails at a different point,
Until you can collect enough consistent data, it’d be hard to pinpoint what the problem is.

I am not getting anywhere…could use advice

My problem is not due to too much traffic on the channel I am using …as on the same computer using Kubuntu instead of Tumbleweed I am able to use wireless access from my phones hotspot…

I can connect to the wireless from hotspot

I can ping www.google.com…I cannot get on the internet through a browser

Here is my resolv.conf
