While scouring through the various posts the topic of usb support, it appears to be kicked from post to pillar with varying degrees of success reported by users.
I use VBox OSE and I like to stick with it as it is updated automatically by way of the repository. However usb support seems to be missing unless I am wrong. This is unfortunate in my case, since printer installation requires the presence of a usb port. Granted, there are workarounds by moving files to the host O/S but it is not an elegant solution.
Now my question: Is there perhaps a solution to to get VBox OSE to recognize usb ports?
I think the usb support isn’t implemented yet, so there can’t be a workaround. (Note: I don’t know it exactly)
Use the Non-OSE Edition from the homepage, it’s not bad having one program not updated automatically.
There are so much things running automatically, by this you can step back from getting too lazy
Thank you very much for replying first of all. As I suspected, there is no solution for usb with the OSE version.
For the time being, I stick with the OSE version. I believe that I would have to recompile the kernel (there may be many) and go through other hoops whenever a full version is released. I recall this song and dance with VMplayer. No, I would not call it lazy, it is just convenient in my case to update with ready compiled OSE versions. Besides, there is more to life than computers. lol!
Hopefully, in the not too distant future, usb will be available in the OSE version as well.

If you have the kernel sources and base development installed, the rpm from
Sun takes care of all the kernel related actions - install the rpm and go.
When VirtualBox informs you of an update (on startup) then pick a
convenient time and go to the web site and grab the appropriate rpm - it
will install over what you have and off you go. The only thing I’ve had to
do when upgrading to a new release is to re-run the extensions to get the
mouse and keyboard back to seamless but even that doesn’t happen every time
and it’s a no-brainer to run.
You can download the arch independent installer from the virtual box website. I don’t know if the suse rpm in their site will work or not. (I guess it will work- i don’t think the rpm is for OSE there. )
I myself use to download the arch independent one and install it from there. It doesnot take too much time and is very easy.
