Basically an almost clean installation, with only trusted repositories.
Now I have to do a reboot to bring up the USB devices, leaving them connected or turned on during boot, because I would have to start the work day, but instead it will be another day of configuration to recover everything I now miss after the update.
Just restarted I will post the data of the same commands again, so we will see the differences.
See you soon.

Ok, here I am, after reboot.
USB peripherals, turned on or connected at startup, appeared.
They are as slow as before the upgrade.
Nothing seems to have changed.
The data.

Now I begin the tedious session of restoring the entire system.
See you again, let’s see if anything comes to your mind.

Does this appear when you boot anything besides 15.4? I wonder if it’s broken with 15.4’s kernel if it appears everywhere else. Was it there in 15.3 do you know by any chance? Do you have an older 15.3 thread here somewhere with dmesg or journal in it? How about trying a 5.18 kernel? If that cures it, it spells bug in 15.4 kernel.

I didn’t run dmesg when I tried Puppy or Mint.
I can always try later.
Good idea.

Unfortunately, I have not participated in this forum for several years.
Typically I use the Italian version of the Suse forum.
But unfortunately, even in that, I hadn’t written anything for years and, I checked, I didn’t find any dmesg results from 15.3.
I searched the Internet for a while and found a Live version of 15.3, as soon as I can I boot from that and check.

An interesting test I took this morning.
I downloaded a KDE 15.4 Live, burned to DVD and booted from that.
I encountered exactly the same problems my internal disk installation has.
No recognition of USB disks if they are turned on or connected to the system already started.
On the other hand, after a boot with the USB disks connected or turned on, the same extreme slowness of execution of the commands on the files.
Even the test with copying the same 84.2Mb file from the same USB memory, into the same USB port, gave the same result, 5 minutes and 30 seconds to be copied.
I believe a bug could be an explanation at this point.

It could be an idea.
Now, having only the standard installation repositories I only see 5.14 as the only available version of the kernel.
Different versions, including 5.18, I see them available on the “Software OpenSUSE” site only from repositories like “home:”, you mean one of those?
I see a 5.15, a 5.16, two 5.18s and a 5.19rc, all from the “home:” repository.
Is there one that you recommend in particular?
True, you can always easily go back.

Right now I am writing from the system with the live boot from 15.3
Everything works perfectly.
USB devices are all recognized quickly and perfectly as soon as they are turned on or connected after the system starts up.
Perfect operation in terms of speed.
The usual file copy, of the usual file, from the usual USB key, inserted in the usual port, copied to the desktop of Live 15.3, and the duration of the copy practically immediate, I could not even count the seconds.

We trust you have received the usual lecture from the local System
Administrator. It usually boils down to these three things:

#1) Respect the privacy of others.
    #2) Think before you type.
#3) With great power comes great responsibility.

I’m in a bit of a rush now.
In the afternoon maybe I try a newer kernel as a version.
Otherwise, if nothing changes, I think I should think about going back to 15.3, and maybe wait a bit before moving on to 15.4.
I do not know.

Yes, the 5.18.x kernel-default from the URI provided in comment #23, which is not from any home: repo. Save Kernel:stable.repo to /etc/zypp/repos.d/ to enable it to be installed with zypper or YaST just like any other package.

I’m sorry @mrmazda, I just didn’t notice that you gave me the active link to the repository.
Ok, now I’m trying.
At the moment it gives me the error of missing dependency for ‘libc.so.6 (GLIBC_2.34) (64bit)’.
I tried looking for it on the “OpenSUSE Software” site but strangely I can’t find it.
I’m working on it.
As soon as I solve it I try.

Mmmmmmmm!!
Excuse me @mrmazda I ask you for information.
I think there is something that escapes me.
When I was looking for the kernel from the “Software OpenSUSE” site I found only versions from the “home:” repository, instead you turned me over to a more official repository.
Then it was missing ‘libc.so.6 (GLIBC_2.34) (64bit)’ and “Software OpenSUSE” I find, again, only in the “home:” repository, which I installed anyway.
Now it’s up to “filesystem”, and this site doesn’t even have it in a version 16 as the 5.18 kernel requires.
Can I ask what system you use to find software from more official sources other than the “Software OpenSUSE” site?
Now without a source for “filesystem” I can’t install the 5.18 kernel.

I’m sorry I gave you wrong URLs for the 5.18 kernel. I still haven’t gotten used to all the changes made for Leap to use SLE kernels beginning with 15.3.

Please remove the 5.18 you installed, and use these instead to install 5.18 that uses 15.4’s own glibc:
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Kernel:/stable:/Backport/standard/x86_64/ Use to examine what is available before enabling the repo.
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Kernel:/stable:/Backport/standard/Kernel:stable:Backport.repo Enables repo when placed in /etc/zypp/repos.d/.

No problem, as I mentioned in my previous post, in the end, I was unable to install 5.18 from the previous repository, due to the missing “filesystem” version 16 dependency.
Removed the old repository and inserted the new one and I was able to install the 5.18 kernel, as recommended.

Fantastically everything fell into place.
USB memories are recognized perfectly and quickly when turned on or connected.
Once recognized and mounted they work at the “right” speed, the one I expect.
Even the “usual” copy of the file made it in a few seconds, 3/4.
So everything is fine with regards to the USB problem.
We can say, I believe, that it was really a 5.14 kernel problem.

But, there is a but.
I use, among other things, VirtualBox, the Oracle version, with the rpm taken from the Oracle link.
Now it doesn’t work, it requires you to perform the configuration procedure as it always does when you change the kernel, but trying the procedure fails.
This is the error in the log

gcc: error: unrecognized command line option ‘-mharden-sls=all’; did you mean ‘-mhard-float’?

Could it be an incompatibility with a “too new” version of gcc?
However, it is not an urgent problem.
I use VirtualBox a lot but for a while now I won’t have to use it.
Then it will eventually be the subject of another request for help later.
For now I enjoy the system that is back fluid, with the programs that no longer crash when they access the USB and with the reboot or shutdown that is no longer very slow or freezing.
Now first I have to recover not only all the software I still have to reinstall but also all the backlog that this anomaly has delayed me.
Then eventually I will try, calmly, to see to make VirtualBox work, and then eventually, if I don’t succeed, I will try again to ask for help again.

For now, I want to thank both of you who helped me by providing tips and solutions that ultimately worked and allowing me to learn more about Linux.

The 15.4 kernel failure needs to be reported as a bug:
https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Submitting_bug_reports
https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Bug_reporting_FAQ
https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Bugreport_kernel
When you make your report, be sure to mention, and provide the URI to, this thread. With any luck, a fixed 15.4 kernel will be made available before you need VBox working.

Thank you for the information and advice.
Actually I’d like to be able to open a bug report to help with development, but I don’t think I’m capable of it.
You have noticed how I have little experience with Linux and I lose myself in even trivial situations.
I don’t know if I would be able to reply and provide reliable information for the bug reports.
I’ve never reported a bug and don’t even know where to start.
I have read the first part of the FAQ but I have not already understood it completely.
I don’t know, what do you recommend?
In your opinion, it’s not as difficult as it seems to me and could I do it too?

If you don’t try, the developers will not know there is any issue. Do the best you can using those three URIs I provided. The developers can ask for more information or clarification if you do something they don’t understand, or you make a mistake. Include in your report the URI of this thread.

Thank you for the encouragement.
I decided and tried.
Bug 1201746 – Leap 14.5 Kernel 5.14 - USB storage devices are not detected and extremely slow
I have tried to explain it best, but concise, and have referred to this thread several times.
I’m curious to see how this will work.
I first looked if there were already other similar reports but I didn’t find any.
We’ll see, I hope to be able to provide more information, if they ask me, without “disturbing” the developers too much.
Hopefully I will keep this thread updated if there are any interesting news. :good:

Looks like you can mark this thread fixed now.

True, now the problem is solved.
Yesterday, the 5.14.21-150400.24.11-default kernel update arrived in the standard repositories.
This update solved the USB peripheral problem, which I tested this morning.
Thanks to Takashi Iwai, programmer at SUSE.com, who responded to my bug report, and to all of you who have helped me.

Sorry mrmazda, can you tell me if I can modify the thread in some way, perhaps closing it, or putting a [Resolved] in the title, or something similar?
I ask you this because I don’t see the “edit” button in the first post, or no way to “close” it.
Thank you.

I think the best you can do in this forum is add solved to the title in a reply post, but indicating so in a reply as yours suggests should be good enough.

Give yourself a pat on the back. Few get a solution from their first bug report so quickly as you did.
