usb over ip server for linux?

Hi,
I recently installed opensuse 11.1 after migrating from vista. I have a couple of external hard drives and a printer/scanner that i would like to connect wirelessly to my laptop. (I mean i want to have the HDs in a cupboard out of view and just have the system access them, no more cables!)
In the house internet is shared over a wireless modem-router and the main computers is my opensuse laptop and a macbook.

  1. I think the device that does the work is a usb over IP (or over network?) server (or am i wrong?)
  2. Can you recommend a device that is linux-ready or that can work in linux one way or another? (one that i saw is plug-n play in xp/vista)
    Thanks in advance!

Slightly old… but might be what you want:

thanks for the link, but as far as i could get it, this means that the scanner has to be connected to one computer and SANE would allow the other network computers to access it.
On the other hand, what i would like to do is have the HD and printer/scanner connected to the gadget, probably in another room from my computer, and connect to them wirelessly through this gadget, without any HD or printer being physically connected to the computer.
I think this is what this does (though not sure about wireless, it seems to connect to an ethernet port, could probably go to the ethernet of the wireless rooter?) and not sure if there are drivers for linux for this or any similar device?

Yes that’s very true.

If I understand USB correctly, I don’t believe a generic wireless
usb handler is possible (??)

But since there are USB-wireless print servers… maybe there
is hope (??)

I found this device available in my country
http://www.raidsonic.de/de/data/data_pdf/icybox/datasheet_ib-lan104_e.pdf

which seems to be doing exactly this
But it says
This accomplishment is based on the Windows Rally software which is included in delivery of the ICY BOX IB-LAN104. Windows Rally has to be installed on each computer which is to use the LAN extender. Computers have to work with Windows XP or Vista. Access to the connected drives is limited to one user at a time. Any other user will be informed that access is impossible momentarily. The system recognizes only those data formats which are readable for Windows. EXT2, EXT3 (Linux) and HFS+ (Mac) are not recognized by Windows Rally.

Can windows rally (whatever this is?) be made to work in linux? Is there any alternative software for linux or any hardware designed to install in linux?

The current stable kernel (2.6.29.3) contains an configuration option
USB_WUSB “Enable Wireless USB extensions (EXPERIMENTAL)” so it would
seem that something like that is possible. But I know next to
nothing about that because I do not have such hardware.

I also remember a discussion on linux-usb@vger.kernel.org about how
to implement a “USB over IP” protocol similar to what some Windows
only gadgets offer. Again, I do not know any details because I didn’t
have any personal need for it.

But it might be worth a closer look.

Here are a few options to do what you are talking about to Linux.

The USB/IP Project | Get The USB/IP Project at SourceForge.net

USB Redirector - USB over IP - USB over Network - Incentives Pro

A few month ago I saw a USB over IPserver from U. S. Converters, unfortunately they don’t have it on their website anymore. Worth a try contacting them though.
