USB mouse failing on new motherboard

Hi,

System: OpenSuSE 11.0
Mouse: Microsoft Intellipoint Optical

I’m having some troubles and am in need of any assistance you can spare. I’ve recently upgraded to an ASUS A8N-SLI, SuSE transitioned over smoothly as I set the system to mount via volume/disk labels; it booted up perfectly although, naturally, I needed to run SaX2 to reconfigure the X server. After I did this, I logged into my desktop and after about a minute the mouse stopped responding. The lights would still light up upon movement however the cursor would not move. I unplugged and reinserted the device however it would not light up.

I have tried the mouse on my Windows disk and my other Windows computer and it works fine. I have already tried reconfiguring SaX2 and removing the mouse0 file from /dev/input yet the problem still persists. In fact, I’m navigating the forums with a keyboard. After the mouse fails, if I try testing a new SaX2 configuration, switching virtual consoles or doing anything which would switch resolution the computer locks up and displays s screenful of coloured, fuzzy lines. I imagine this has something to do with an X configuration somewhere, I’ll post my X configs here.

Here’s the new one SaX2 generated after the upgrade.

Thanks in advance.

I am having a similar problem, though it is intermittent for me and rarely stops completely. I am using 11.2, 32 bit and have used the USB mouse/motherboard combination for some with no problems. Thanks. d

Well, why not to upgrade to opensuse 11.2 64 bit?

You can try the LiveCD of the OS, to check the mouse issue.

To me, it is not a matter of configuration in xorg.conf. More likely, the trouble is in mouse driver, mouse’s hardware or the USB subsystem.

That’s the thing, the mouse worked flawlessly on the old motherboard. I did consider upgrading to 11.2, however when the mouse started playing up in Windows, then I knew it was an OS independent issue. It turns out that the motherboard doesn’t play nicely with this mouse via any USB port, so I plugged it into the PS/2 mouse port via a USB-PS/2 converter. Of course, the problem is not technically resolved, but it’s a perfectly fine workaround. My side buttons still work so I can’t complain; but I want to know why Windows would just ignore the issue (and recognise the mouse again upon a reinsertion) whereas X would die. I imagine somebody else would be curious too.

I only ever upgrade when the support is going to run dry and when most packages have been built for the next version; or when I’m just plain curious. I have tried the live CD though, and it is quite good. I will have to check if the mouse works via USB under 11.2, though.

Moderator(s), please mark this as resolved. Thanks for the advice.
