usb memory stick hangs

Hi

I have a new install of 11.2 from dvd on a new MSI desktop.

when I plug in a USB memory stick and open Dolphin it causes the computer to hang. If I remove the stick again, the computer works normally. It does not even get mounted

The memory stick can be accessed as normal in the virtual machine (win XP) that I am running.

The memory stick works fine on my laptop running Opensuse 11.2

Any help would be great.

Thanks

Steve

when i plug in a UBS stick it is autodetected and a popup asks me what
i want to to do…like, “Open in a New Window?”, “Do Nothing?”,
“Browse with [something]?”, “Open in [something]?” and etc

is that what you get? is it offering to open it up in Dolphin, you
click to do so and THEN your computer freezes…

or exactly how is the freeze happening?

and, when you say freeze: is anything happening? that is, is your hard
drive light on or off? flickering? (i’m thinking maybe beagle or
something similar is indexing the USB stick) or, can you use the mouse
or keyboard? are the LEDs for Caps lock and num-lock flickering?

if when it freezes you wait 10 minutes, does the computer un-freeze
itself?

if you computer is frozen, how do you know it does not get mounted?

are you saying you boot up openSUSE, launch XP in a VM and then XP
uses the stick normally? while openSUSE is frozen?

probably this desktop computer has several different USB ports…maybe
even some in front and some in back…try plugging into the back
(unless already in the back, then try a front port)…and, give it
some time to react…

and, two final questions:

-did you md5sum check the install disk prior to install?

-are you having any other strange things happening on this desktop?

Ok I think you have found the problem. If I wait a few min’s it comes up as per normal so I think it is indexing or something. I seem to remember that I uninstalled beagle some time ago on the laptop, I will check later on the laptop.

Thanks for your input, if I still have problems I will post a complete answer to all the questions you asked, so we can try track down if the problem still exists.

Thanks Steve
