Hi Folks
I’m engaged in my annual try Linux attempt and having trouble starting Open Suse
from a usb stick on my netbook Asus Aspire one 255(no dvd)
I downloaded openSUSE-13.1-DVD-i586.iso and used ImageWriter to copy it to the usb (8GB)
Got the ok success confirmation.
Changed boot order to the usb.
On starting it attempts but I get the missing or broken linux message top left,
then it carries on with loading win as per normal.
I got the MD5_and_SHA_Checksum_Utility and ran it.
It seems to want the the original number from the source to compare with my download.
He’s the issue, where is that number located ?
apparently the ‘metalink’ download has it and I could get a firefox addon.
This news comes further down the page after I already chose 'direct link ’ doh
I’m not downloading the whole shebang again.
any clues on why it won’t start much appreciated.
cheers
Pete
Go down the page; on the “Verify your download before use” should be
printed the checksum; it is not, but the words “md5 checksum” are a link
to a file:
It is actually the same link that the one for the ISO, but ending in
“…iso.md5” instead.

NO, not “direct link”; but “metalink”. If the destination of the
download is the same where the downloaded image is already downloaded,
it /should/ see it and check it first.
Also, if with a browser that does NOT have the metalink plugin installed
or enabled, you try to download the metalink file, that file is a
smallish text file that does include a checksum and way more.
Thanks for your comprehensive reply
I understand your explaination about the checksum
I think I may have downloaded the wrong version of open suse, I got the ‘download DVD’
but I haven’t got a DVD on the netbook. Maybe i should have got the
'live gnome ’ or ‘live KDE’ ?
would that explain why I get the broken or missing error ?
thanks
Pete
When you want the live system, you download one of the live versions. When you want the instalaltion version, you download the installation version. It is up to you.
You write the ISO (after checking the checksum) to an USB stick as explained on the download page. https://en.opensuse.org/Live_USB_stick
Most easy IMHO:
dd if=........iso of=/dev/sdN bs=4M
And dp not forget, sdN should be the correct device file for your USB device (and not something like sdN1, you should write to the device, not to a partition, existing or not).
It would be if i understood what I’m looking at
still unclear if the ‘download DVD’ was a wrong version to put on the usb stick
as I tried to outline in my original post, I did write the iso to the stick using ImageWriter
which said ‘ok’
Now I’m attempting the checksum from that md5 checksum link
but it reports the numbers don’t match.
so i need to download it again ?
sorry no idea what the code bit means but understand about correct device not partition
thanks
Pete
I think we have to go back a step. You say you downloaded openSUSE-13.1-DVD-i586.iso and put it on a 8GB stick.

As you see above, that ISO file is more then 40 GB in size (and most download methods will also tell you how large the file is that is downloding). How can you put such a thing on an 8 GB stick?

Wow
Just 4.4 GB

It does not matter.
If you are placing the image on a USB stick, it does not matter if you
have a DVD reader or not.

My practice is to download the DVD iso, write it to a USB and install with that. Installing with the DVD image is more satisfactory than installing with live media (in my opinion).
So I would say that you were doing it the right way. The remaining issue is whether you got a good download.
yep, I run the MD5_and_SHA_Checksum_Utility
in the top line ‘file’ I point it at the downloaded openSUSE-13.1-DVD-i586 .iso
in the bottom line ‘hash’ I put the number (1096c9c67fc8a67a94a32d04a15e909d)from the link ‘MD5 checksum’ on the ‘verify your download before use’ section

That’s the md5 checksum for the 64-bit iso. I presume that they did not match.
You need to check the 32-bit box before you click on the “verify” link.
This is the md5 checksum that I am seeing for the 32-bit iso:
Thanks,
That number still gives me ‘does not match’
not sure if I just enter the number or the number with the openSUSE-13.1-DVD-i586.iso after it.
either way, it’s a mismatch
I suppose I need a new download.
Pete
Right, I had another go. Downloaded the 64bit version, checked with the 64 bit hash, no match. Does the shot below look right ?
If that one is broken too, I’m giving up, used my monthly cap now.
Cheers
Pete
If you happen to live in the Chicago area, then I can arrange that.
When I had a too-slow connection, my practice was to purchase the install media (those days it was CD rather than DVD). It’s usually not too expensive and less frustrating. The distrowatch.com site lists places where you can buy media.
