Can it be that you automatically mount the drives but do not unmount them?
The automounters in the desktop envirionments create a folder with the disk
name in the /media folder, if such an folder already exists (as garbage
maybe from an previous mount which was not removed) they create a new folder
which is somehow counted up.
Unmount your drive with nutilus/dolphin or whatever you use. Please unplug
it to be sure you do not delete something on it.
Go into the media folder an delete this USBHDD, USBHDD1 … folders (I cannot
check if you need to be root I do not have the problem, I only so it once
and do not remember).
Now if you plug in your device again it should come up in USBHDD, don’t
forget to unmount it in the future.
If this was not your problem come back with more details about your
workflow.
Hope that helps.
This is another USB Drive Issue.
openSUSE 11.3 KDE 4.4 X64. When I turn on a USB hard drive it autodetects and I can mount it. I can’t however find any dialog for safely removing the drive. Is this normal in openSUSE 11.3? In openSUSE 11.1 there was a dialog for safely removing the drive once mounted.

Are you using gnome or kde?
In gnome when I am in the file browser (nautilus) I can right click on the
drive name in the left pane where the places/folders are shown and unmount
or safely remove the device.
In my kde on the pc (opensuse 11.2) there is a (I do not know its name, I
also switched to gnome here) widget which informs you when a device is
plugged in (left bottom). If you click on that you see the plugged devices
and a triangle behind it, click the triangle this unmounts the device.

Was a silly question from my side sorry.

I see that now. Actually it’s quite good. KDE 3.5 had a nearly similar action when USB media first started taking off.
It was totally not where I was looking for it though.
