USB Hard Drive not detected

Hi there, I’m newlyish running openSUSE 11.0 and trying to access for the first time my documents/music/photos/most things which are on an external H/D (FreeAgent seagate 360GB, NTFS). Problem is nothing happens when i plug it in, either before or after i boot up, or on KDE 3 or 4. A USB mouse and 1GB usb stick have worked fine.

So nothing turns up in /media/ or on: cat /etc/fstab

bendare@linux-yiho:~> cat /etc/fstab

also the light which flashes when it’s connected to a computer isn’t flashing.
How do i go about detecting and mounting it? I did check other forums but couldn’t translate anything to my prob. Please say what other information i might need to post, I’m not used to all this yet.
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
Try to mount the partition and see what is happening:
sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt

Hi
If you plug the device in, then run the command dmesg, do you see any
info regarding it (should be the last entries).

Thanks for suggestion but it’s not the partition I’m worried about, that’s my old Windows partition. My issue is that the external hardrive isn’t showing up anywhere so i beleive that means i can’t mount it. Or am i misunderstanding you?

malcolmlewis…
Have done that and don’t believe anything there is related. Last few lines are:

cheers, will have a look

Hmm, different problem now.
Tried replugging the power lead into the external drive and it showed up!
But… tried to open it in konqueror and got this message:

dmesg | tail gives:
