USB GSM modem stick problem (Not Connecting to Internet)

Hi…

I am trying to connect internet in open SUSE 11.1 via EDGE GPRS modem Model MMX610U (micromax, Airtel) using Network Manager. I configured mobile broadband in network manager. The connetion made successfully (in GNOME) two times after trying many times and displayed all the information about stick (model,IP, Band, etc) successfully in network manager. But now I am trying to connect the same again but not able to connect and even not displaying the device information in the network manager and automatically disapperas opened properties tab.

The system is detecting the device as below in the ‘dmesg’ command.

But not able to connect to internet, it only search for signals for some time and do nothing.

two times i connected successfullly and posting msg of /var/log/localmessages ( when connected)**

no problem with stick as I tested my USB modem with windows and fedora, it works fine.

any help will be appreciated.

I have updated my system online using wired internet and after that it worked awesome. and showing all the detail about the GSM stick.

I am trying to set up a USB GSM modem as well. Looking at /var/log/messages, it shows the device when I plug it in, but NetworkManager isn’t autodetecting it. How do I configure NetworkManager to see the device?

I had a very similar problem with my Huawei USB stick modem E220/E270 (V=12d1 D=1003) with my openSUSE 11.1.
Initially I was able to used it only in Vista.
The device was identified correctly, but the NetworkManager would not connect.
(I did follow the guide at Huawei UMTS USB Stick - openSUSE)

utmsmon was able to work with it though, without actually creating the Internet conenction (Modem was connected successfully).
After several other attempts:

  • service restart network
  • disable NM from yast and attempt manual config of the device
  • replug the stick
  • enter and remove APN, username/password, PIN etc…
    I reverted back all changes and simply rebooted.
    To my surprise, NM showed the spinning gear and quickly connected (I did not change the connection’s setup).
    When I disconnected I was not able to get online again without a reboot.
    Later I tried to disconnect via NM first and I was even able to reconnect again without reboot.

When today I tried the same sequence, I went back to my initial sorry state of affairs.
NM won’t connect (no spinning gear at all).
Even utmsmon now refuses to connect and ppp returns the error:
Received serial link is not 8-bit clean:
Problem: all had bit 7 set to 0

/var/log/messages shows the successful attempts like (sorry I can’t get the exact text now):

USB modem opened on /dev/ttyUSB0
ppp <—> /dev/ttyUSB0
CHAP authentication ok
…other comforting messages…
USB modem closed on /dev/ttyUSB0

whereas now the failed ones shows up like:
USB modem opened on /dev/ttyUSB0
USB modem closed on /dev/ttyUSB0

Any pointer / hint is greatly appreciated.

I just found an older post of a problem very similar to mine that I did not check.
I will give it a try now.

The fix (usb_modeswitch) did not make any difference.
I managed to partially solve the issue by defining the modem with Yast.
Still…

  • 50% of the time I get ‘no carrier’ when connecting or,
  • I get a connection but no DNS is set for it (ping <IP> works but ping <hostname> does not).
    It could be that the network is very slow…

I tried also kde4 instead, after reading other threads here, but the ‘no carrier’ seems to happen even more often.

hi i had the same problem. i i have a hawei e22x . anyways in ubuntu it works like a charm. i do not know what it is but i compared internet connection info in both ubuntu and opensuse. right click on network connection on the bar. and it was diff
maybe if you try your internet modem on ubuntu and change the settings on your suse machine to be similar to those in ubuntu ( ip address, sub netmask, broadcast address.
a simpler solution would be to use ubuntu but it looks awful!
word of advice! u should find away to export your account info from vista like passwork username … if i am guessing correctly
the device came with a program to be used in windows. so extract the info from that program.

u should be able to do it!
if not give ubuntu a try.
