usb flash drive doesn't auto-mount

Hi,

I recently upgraded to Gnome 2.30 and now usb drives don’t auto-mount and show-up in Nautilus as a device.

I can mount the drive manually, but it would be nice if this happened automatically when I plugged it in.

It would be much appreciated if someone could steer me in the right direction to fix this.

Thanks.

Do you see the Device in Konqueror when you type “Sysinfo:/”?

Probably not because he is using Gnome.

Never had this problem in any version of Gnome I have used.
Should just work

Thanks for the replies,

@caf4926,
I’ve not had a problem before either. When I plug in devices, it is detecting them and assigning them to /dev/sde for the first drive and then /dev/sdf if I plug in a second one. I can then mount these manually without any problems, but as I said earlier, it would nice if I could get it to work automatically, like it did before I upgraded Gnome.

Hi
Check with the gconf-editor /apps/nautilus/preferences/media_automount
is checked.

Hi Malcolm, thanks for the suggestion.

Unfortunately I had already checked this and media_automount is selected.

I also just put a CD in to check if it auto-mounted, and it doesn’t either.
I’m searching through Bugzilla now, as Google didn’t bring up anything useful.

I have been experiencing the exact same symptoms for the last month. My started on or about the 15th September after some online updates. My USB and dvd/cdrom drives seem to register and are there if I use fdisk -l but they no longer automount and I am having to mount them manually.

The strange thing is it seems to be mighty quiet on planet opensuse 11.3 and yours is the only reference I can find to the problem. I have even un-installed all KDE components in case they were somehow effecting this but no joy. I too have the settings selected in gconf.

I ran

rpm -qa --queryformat '%{INSTALLTIME}	%{INSTALLTIME:date}	%{NAME}
' | sort -g | cut -f 2-

to see if I could spot the app or update that was culprit but I could not determine what may have caused it.

Pls let me know if you have any luck. To further complicate matters mine is Education 11.3 which up until now I have been more happy with than the standard 11.3 cos of it’s flexibility in the household

Hi bossey1,

I’ve not been able to find a fix for this and unfortunately due to a lack of time at the moment I’ve stopped searching. I’m hoping some random update one day fixes it. Until then I’ve setup a workaround in the fstab file to allow me to mount and unmount my two usb drives easily in nautilus.

Sorry I can’t be more of a help.

If you come up with anything, post it here, it will be much appreciated.

hi david71,

you should check whether you have cleanly upgraded. Sometimes old libraries are laying around which are conflicting with gnomes functionality. so how did you upgrade from which system? 11.2 i think since 11.3 already ships with 2.30.

you should run nautilus in terminal and post the errors also you might want to check /var/log/messages and .xsession-errors in your home directory while doing this by simply use

tail -f /var/log/messsages
tail -f ~/.xsession-errors

and post the output while running nautilus.

oh and just a guess: but are you using compiz?

l1zard

There are differences between mine and david71.

Mine is 32bit not 64 and I did not upgrade Gnome. 11.3 already came with Gnome 2.30 so the update was a normal yast update which included some Gnome and kernel security updates. It seems we may have a hard time evening beginning to trace the problem and sort this.

I already monitored messages to find out that usb-stick is recognized by the system when plugged. X-session errors gives no clue not does it react when the stick is plugged in.

have you tried using an other user account? does the problem appear here too?

which repositories have you enabled?

The worst thing is that when I insert a usb stick that’s when I get the message “device now unmounted” e.g. Sandisk Cruzer 16gb is now unmounted.

Is it mounted till then or is something causing it to unmount as soon as it tries to automount?

Just thinking out loud…

I think this has more to do with security settings than repositories, Gnome version, etc. This is exactly how I want my system to behave, i.e., not auto-mount USBs & CDs, and instead prompt me for a password… but can’t figure out how to do it :frowning:
